Why do we have different #bathrooms anyway; cant we just have just #toilets with little cabinets where the loos are, and because there are urinoirs, those can be inside such a cabinet as well.

#WordWeavers 2026.02.03 —Share a vivid sensory description from your story. What was writing it like?

Bolt's university student boyfriend, Molt, with whom she's had lots of fun and for whom she's just bought a gift, shows up pummeled. She will soon learn it's her mob coworker who did it. Molt is so frightened, he's packing to leave Home City. She's a day angel.

"Who did this to you?" I asked, trying to be the adult, a role I was certain to mess up, even acting out mother's how-to-be-a-mother script. I brought up my wings, tapping joints on the wood ceiling, blocking the glaring light of the sprite lantern hung in the center of the room, creating an ever smaller shaded space we alone occupied; it didn't matter he was bigger than me. I hoped he felt protected, as protected as I'd felt growing up when mother did it for me. My splayed feathers filtered the dimness to blue, making his darkening bruises stand out. Lines of scabs on his scraped knees resembled distant barbed wire. Sweat. I remembered it was salty. My nose twitched. I'd liked his male scent—might have recognized him by it, but this? Acidic. Acrid. Fear mixed with else's stink. I hated the change. I hated who caused it.

The who did this answered itself.

A shaking palm flattened against my sternum, stopping me. I felt the distressed thump of my heart. He would, too. For a time, neither of us relented, breathing hard. He calmed though, snuffled mucus, and inhaled deeply.

—from a chapter titled Molting from Reluctant Courier (for the Mob)

Is it vivid?

The vividness of the language in this passage results from iterative revision. It's me asking myself if a statement is something I could feel, hear, smell, see, or taste. It's choosing active verbs instead of "was." It's replacing the non-concrete with the concrete, and then switching out cool measured words with words to insight fire and emotion.

The vividness of feeling comes from the context and what it demanded. Male and female gender roles are reversed here, and she is a day angel with wings. What comes before is her reviewing in her head the trauma of dealing with her own phobia of flying (mostly healed, not forgotten), and the family issues surrounding her not fledging until she was 10 instead of 3. It's her mob affiliation that's hurt him; she wants to protect him but knows it's impossible. I had to write in all their vulnerabilities and neither emasculate him nor prevent her jock instincts from robbing her of a nurturing side. Her feelings must come off as earnest.

A quotation from The Bible

All baptised in Christ, you have all clothed yourselves in Christ, and there are no more distinctions between Jew and Greek, slave and free, male and female, but all of you are one in Christ Jesus.

Our Gender Score review is out on JMIR. Thanks to the amazing work of L. Schindler and all of the co-authors, we have confirmed the existence of a huge gap between what is used in literature to define Gender, and what is actually available in the data coming from clinics. We here provide guidelines and suggestions for researchers and institutions, and our next step is to discover how we can use the available clinical routine data to address the gender blindness in medicine. Give it a read!

Flowchart infographic showing the research methodology. Phase 1: Scoping review identifying gender scores through PubMed search in June 2024, starting with 1202 articles, narrowing to 30 after title and abstract screening, and including 22 articles in the final review. Phase 2: Systematic assessment of applicability and practicability, examining scores for social gender and gender identity, prospective and retrospective development, cohort type and size, usability, implementation, and interrelations between gender scores. Phase 3: Evaluation against routine clinical data from the Medical Informatics Initiative Core Data Set (MII CDS), comparing gender score variables to MII CDS using data from all 38 university hospitals in Germany, focusing on the Person Module with demographic information. Below, a pink arrow points to 'Implications for future work' section with four recommendations: (1) Analyze MII CDS social history text data with artificial intelligence, (2) Collect social history data in machine-readable form, (3) Integrate a 2-step gender identity measure during patient admission, and (4) Develop custom gender score approaches based on available MII CDS variables. The Medical Informatics Initiative Germany logo appears in the evaluation section and future work section.

#PennedPossibilities 920 — How does your MC feel about their childhood home?

At this point in composing her story, though Bolt hasn't said it, she wants to go home. Her mother and uncle didn't support her dreams, but after being forced to involuntarily work for the mob thanks to a train wreck of stupid mistakes, mistakes Bolt accepts proves her parents were both right and knew what was best, her spirit is crushed. In a society where brothers typically raise their sister's children, she thinks about how she last saw her baby brother when he was 5. He's now 17 and couldn't possibly remember her. She's 30. It makes her keenly introspective, which demonstrates how she's grown from the arrogant teen jock she once was. Working for the mob, Bolt can't go home. It would expose them to danger. But her home and her mistakes and longing comes up when she's looking at a package of contraceptives. She realizes that having children is something she mustn't ever let happen. Her homesickness worsens when she catches herself being motherly to a boyfriend who's ⅔rds her age. It makes her feel really old.

Why Males Exist by Fred Hapgood, 1979

An Inquiry Into the Evolution of Sex

A provocative examination of why the male gender exists at all shapes up as something of an antidote to the more macho sexual tracts that have been appearing in the wake of sociobiology. (E.g., Wallace, below.) The Atlantic Monthly science columnist goes so far as to say that "males have been devised by females to aid them in their competition with other females."

His thesis is based on an examination of life from simple bacteria to monogamous mammals. Bacteria are essentially asocial and asexual, resorting to a form of mating with some gene exchange under certain environmental conditions. Bisexuality occurs at a second, more advanced, level of organism complexity, where there is some gain from the greater variety that gene-mixing confers. Full-fledged male and female genders are common at a third stage of evolution when social competition and a sufficiently stable environment provide opportunities for optimal gene exchanges. At this point Hapgood sees male sexuality evolving to ""serve"" what is essentially the female ""manufacturing"" role. Males compete and females select. Only at a fourth stage do male and female roles evolve to the point where lengthy pair bonds and even monogamous matings occur, with the male investing much time and effort in providing and protecting the female and even sharing in parenting. On the surface the thesis has a more benign cast than the ""sex-for-the-selfish-gene's sake"" theories prevalent. But the theories are really akin. They share the common sociobiological belief in the grand logic of nature, holding that much of human behavior is reducible to a ""reproductive imperative,"" or the equivalent--all of which is obvious.

In case you weren't there, or have forgotten, the battle of the sexes really ramped up in the 90s. Men doubled down on ideas about their rightful place. Women continued to try to prove that they were people too.

#WordWeavers 2026.02.02 — Do you enjoy writing "good", "bad" or morally grey characters more? Why? CW: Morality vs Ethical behavior.

In that "morality" is subjective—based on a set of rules that a powerful person or organization, generally religious, has set as good and just—my characters are to a large degree amoral. For example, women who act independently upon their desires and ambitions, especially without the "guidance" of their father, brothers, or husband are amoral by definition and therefore branded as bad by one or another religious standard. Such things are not considered negotiable. Except by the hypocrisy of bribes or raw power.

If we substitute "ethically grey," the goodest of good characters I depict display ethical flaws. I don't write fairy tales, and my princesses are not of the Disney persuasion. I enjoy making my characters wrestle with their ethics and principles, or to act with limited or misdirected ethics and principles, to contrast the good, the bad, and the ugly in people and society. I enjoy highlighting how morally bad women can be seen as ethically good women defying oppressive authority. If I could not write about the oppression of women and about the abuse everyone, regardless of gender, suffers thanks to the social and moral gender roles indoctrinated into us, I would not be writing at all.
