I named my inner critic "The Beast." 👹
When he starts listing my flaws, I just say,
"Okay Beast, thanks for sharing," and move on.
It’s hard to take the insults seriously when the voice has a silly name.

SPEAKING SHAME 8/10
Shame shows up as internal recordings—shame tapes, gremlins—messages of self-doubt and self-criticism. The less we speak it, the more control it has. 🎧

Build Real Confidence Without Caring What “They” Think

The Moment Every Eye Feels Like a Spotlight

Shut Down Your Inner Critic… Ever walk into a room and instantly convince yourself everyone is judging your outfit, your voice, your existence? That silent panic isn’t protection; it’s your brain gaslighting you into staying small. In a powerful Instagram reel, transformation coach Julien Blanc exposes this exact mechanism: anxiety invents critics that don’t exist to keep you “safe.” The result? You shrink, over-apologize, and rehearse conversations that never happen. Here’s the truth science already proved: we overestimate how much others notice our flaws by up to 35 %. Your mind is writing fiction, and charging you with real confidence for it.

Confidence Isn’t Armour, It’s Deleting the Script

Most people treat confidence like a shield they have to carry. Blanc flips it: real confidence appears the moment you stop performing for imaginary judges. You don’t need better lines; you need to stop auditioning. Try this tonight: send one message or share one opinion without previewing it twelve times. Notice the silence that follows? That’s not rejection, that’s freedom. The audience was never there.

Why Strangers Aren’t Your Jury (Even When It Feels That Way)

Social media supercharges the lie. Perfect feeds make you feel like the only one with unfiltered thoughts. Reality check: everyone is too busy cropping their own chaos to catalogue yours. Next time insecurity spikes, zoom out. Look at the sky. Clouds don’t care about your presentation skills, and neither do 99 % of humans after the first ten seconds.

Rewire the Loop: Three Moves That Actually Work

1. Label the Thought

Say it out loud: “There’s the old ‘they hate me’ story again.” Research from UCLA shows that naming the pattern reduces its emotional punch by 42% in just seconds.

2. Body First, Mind Second

Shoulders back, chin parallel to the ground. Power poses aren’t woo-woo, they drop cortisol and raise testosterone in under two minutes (Harvard, 2010).

3. Flip the Question

Stop asking “Do they like me?” Start asking, “What interesting thing could happen right now?” You shift from victim to creator instantly.

When Approval-Chasing Becomes the Real Addiction

Seeking everyone’s thumbs-up is a slot machine with no jackpot. You pull the lever (filter the photo, soften the opinion, add the disclaimer) and still walk away empty. Your worth was never in the likes; it’s in the quiet certainty that shows up after you speak without bracing for impact.

Daily Micro-Wins That Stack Into Unbreakable Confidence

  • Day 1: Hold eye contact with yourself in the mirror for ten seconds, no flinching.
  • Day 2: Give a stranger a compliment and walk away without waiting for thanks.
  • Day 7: Walk into a room like you already belong there (because you do).

Track them in your notes app. Watching “I existed without apologizing” stack up is pure rocket fuel.

The Final Gut Check: Own It or Let Them Win

Here’s the part most coaches won’t say: nobody is keeping score except you. The laughter you’re terrified of? Half the time, it’s not even about you. Smile first. Watch the illusion shatter. You’re not here to impress, you’re here to take up the space you were always meant to have.

Stop rehearsing for a play that was cancelled years ago. Post the story. Send the message. Speak in the meeting. The world didn’t end last time, and it won’t this time either.

Person B ties her self-worth to flawlessness. Mistakes aren’t just errors—they feel like personal inadequacies. This mindset erodes her confidence and well-being. 💔

Did an interesting workshop prompt on quieting the inner critic with Carly from sequentialartistsworkshop.org/. The prompt was to draw 25 birds (or robots or something else I forgot) in 3 minutes. I'm thinking about trying to turn some of them into machine embroidery.

Pretty happy with these. They are cute. And I can draw, after all :D

22 index cards mostly arranged in a grid with one sketchy bird per card. The drawings are very spare and many of them look pretty similar. Each bird has a beak, feather crest, eye, and feet a minimum.

The inner critic only survives if you argue with it or try to fix it.

Let it speak into emptiness -

no reply,
no defense,
no stage.

A voice without an audience falls silent.

Time for a fragment of lyrics. These are from my song 'Come On, Get Real', which is about the dreaded inner critic. These spoken word/rap lyrics were written to defeat it! The whole song is on my EP that came out in 2022, 'Getting Real'.

While we all need some self regulation we must free ourselves from inner strangulation; if we don't we'll get creative constipation and live our lives by constant imitation. ©️ Saraphir Camille Legind

Grateful my inner critic is off on vaca with @scbiz 's (this AM I imagined them sipping margaritas in a Cancun bar like basic b**ches)

b/c my 2nd pro book review came back this morning and it's good -- with a couple of zinger digs. Usually that would send me into a tailspin but today I looked at it and went

"Well that person's not my reader"

and then thought

"Wait -- who was THAT that just spoke up?"

Because I want to hear more from whoever *that* voice is.

Except unfortunately, *I* did know.

As a child I tried so hard not to believe it. How could those who “love” you, treat one that way?

So I took all that blame and turned it towards myself.

Hence, why many of those who taught me that lesson, still walk the earth today.

A digitally created scene featuring a surreal, dreamlike atmosphere that depicts a misty forest at twilight, framed by the silhouettes of two large, gnarled trees arching in from the left and right.

In the background, a giant full moon glows softly through a turquoise-green haze, casting an ethereal light over the landscape. A single bird is silhouetted in flight near the moon, adding a sense of quiet solitude. At the center of the image, bold white text reads, “As a child, I never imagined that all of the real monsters in the world would be humans.”

This image evokes a sense of childhood wonder evolved into adult reflection, contrasting the innocence of youthful imagination with the complexities and disappointments of real life. Although no artist or author is credited for the image, similar sentiments have been expressed by Cat Winters in her work “In the Shadow of Blackbirds.”

I found this article that really resonated with me. Perfectionism is the enemy of success and it's really hard on writers. We want to get everything right, but there's always a typo somewhere or a metaphor that could be stated in a more sensory fashion, or a scene that needs more show than tell. And it's stifling. Anyway, here it is:
