#Freenet / #Hyphanet 0.7.5 build 1506 is now available:
- fix vulnerability,
- update plugins,
- optimize routing, and
- upkeep
Many thanks to all the contributors and testers who made this release possible!
The insert of #Freenet / #Hyphanet 0.7.5 build 1505 to the update key has started.
Your node should update automatically, if you have auto-update enabled.

This update is fix for a critical vulnerability. Please update -- if you can’t, disable javascript in the node web interface to mitigate the vulnerability.
If you don’t want your communication to be traced, stored in a database, and analyzed to find out whether you may protest, use a pseudonym that can’t be traced back to you.
And only tell close friends that this is you.
For example use #Sone via #Freenet / #Hyphanet.

@dthompson Maybe I should also create a video of FMS on #Freenet / #Hyphanet …
It’s been happily jugging along for 20 years now:
https://freesocial.draketo.de/fms_en.html
via https://www.hyphanet.org
… but it’s definitely not for kids.
Which gets to the actually hard requirements: discord is used by gamers. A replacement needs actually working moderation that keeps communication safe(-r than discord today). In groups.
And that’s a hard problem.
Quick look back on 2025: #Hyphanet 0.7.5 build 1504 isn’t released yet, but many improvements are merged already:
https://github.com/hyphanet/fred/blob/next/NEWS.md
Looking forward to release them soon!
In the meantime: why not take two times 15 minutes between the years to install and try out Hyphanet?
Spin it up, install the Sone plugin, add a pseudonym, then take a break and give it an hour in the background while Sone fetches messages from other pseudonyms.
@mike805
BitTorrent wouldn't work as a censorship circumvention technique in China. The government would just check the DHT for downloaders of banned torrents and go after them.
However, the creater of #Freenet (not #Hyphanet) says that anonymity layers will be possible; they're just not on by default.
@freezenet
Anyone familiar with #hyphanet, aka #freenet?
I used it ages ago and recently discovered that it still exists (but under a new name).I tried to get it running, but I just can't figure out how to get it to work now.
I tried the container image first, but the ports kept changing on every restart, making it impossible to publish/forward the right ones. How the heck is that supposed to work?
I would prefer to stick to the container image, but I did also try the native Debian package. I couldn't seem to convince it to allow me to connect remotely, however, despite changing allowed hosts and bindings.
The KeepAlive plugin has a limit how many files it can keep alive: it can keep files alive as long as their rate of dropping out does not exceed your upload capacity.
As rule of thumb: big files drop out after two weeks (in that time half their data is gone), so you can at most keep a number of files alive whose total size is lower than your upload per month. With 35 peers I can upload 1 GiB per day, so my limit for KeepAlive is 30 GiB.
@theradiocc Etwas spät dran, aber hier gibt es die letzte LinuxLounge jetzt auch dezentral in #Freenet / #Hyphanet (ab 17:21):
http://127.0.0.1:8888/USK@s371qMmwS~HVL9bgib1GRWcwqel9hwGnZ~6gWrICz8s,rI0VLE8hMmBHF~kj5q1VW0yyf9GkauliZbvf7wagcRg,AQACAAE/theradiocc/1

my home server https://aus.social has been inaccessible and returned 502 error for whole evening \ many hours.
I have not seen any 24h upfront notifications about scheduled maintenance. I have not seen a "server on maintenance" page. This left me wonder.
No one advertised here an "X/twitter or other status/downtime/uptime page of a server" .
There is no https://status.aus.social or aus.social/status
Whole situation has been made weirder by https://isup.me which checks for downtime, and "thinks" 502 is normal return code page, marks site as working fine.
So, what exactly happened & what was that maintenance, in technical details?
Is aus.social hosted on single server hardware/vps, because if there was a second server for load balancing - there probably wouldn't be such issue.
Should we expect this situation to repeat?
What is recomended official status page\downtime checker? (that is not hosted on this server and will be accessible in case of downtime)
There is no known contact form with Admin, like IRC\XMPP, outside of Fediverse.
Is server maintained by single person or team or public organisation ?
Also, if it's single person, WHO IS exactly the Admin ?
because this server is advertised and suggested as trusted and reliable on joinmastodon.org , that supposed to communicate to users upfront on any issues.
Also, if you are not on aus.social, but anywhere on fediverse, this is example of how this #fediverse #activitypub is still centralized around single points of failures like DNS, central servers. So my few suggestions to you as user (outside of this issue): Bring your own Server. #Selfhost. You can selfhost static pages for free with #indieweb & activitypub support. Add #hyphanet #scuttlebutt #zeronet keyoxide keybase.io PGP GPG blockchains etherium #p2p #ipfs OrbitDB tox bitmessage jami briar Namecoin http://pubky.tech http://keychat.io to your stack.
