auf der aus splitsteinchen gebildeten oberfläche eines weges krabbelt eine hummel nach links und auf uns zu. sie ist größtenteils schwarz, sowohl der kopf als auch der pelz am bruststück. lediglich das erste hinterleibssegment unter den nach hinten geklappten flügeln ist honig-gelb bepelzt. dass ganz an ende noch weiße haare sind, ist aus dieser perspektive kaum zu sehen

Zimmer mit Frühstück

Das warten, es hat sich gelohnt,
nicht nur eine Blüte über der Wiese trohnt.

Manche haben es leider nicht geschafft,
vor dem ersten Sonnenstrahl verlies sie die Kraft.

Das Tischlein gedeckt und ausgebreitet,
so manches Bienchen sich mit einer anderen streitet.

Ein kurzes Nickerchen, die Erschöpfung ist groß,
sie bleibt einfach liegen in der Blüten Schoß.

Die Blüte schließt sich des abends zu,
hier findet das Bienchen dann seine Ruh.

Mit den ersten Strahlen des Morgens aufgewacht,
Zimmer mit Frühstück, welch eine Pracht.

Zarter Krokus mit unscharfen Hintergrund.

Eine dicke, mit Blütenpollen übersähte Hummel in einer lila Krokusblüte.

Vorhin die ersten Hummelköniginnen (Bombus terrestris/lucorum/magnus/cryptarum) an unserem Heidekraut entdeckt. Auffällig bei beiden Hummelköniginnen sind die Ansammlungen von Milben hinter ihrem Kopf. Dazu habe ich folgendes gefunden: 'Milben leben auf Königinnen (im Frühjahr sehr häufig sichtbar) und Jungköniginnen (im Spätsommer) nur, um von A nach B zu kommen: Die Hummel dient als Taxi, die Milben halten sich an den Haaren fest (vgl. Lebenszyklus der Hummel).
Sehr zielsicher sammeln sich dazu die Milben auf der Jungkönigin im Spätsommer, um mit ihr das Nest zu verlassen und auf ihr zu überwintern. Im kommenden Frühjahr lassen sie sich im neuen Nest dann einfach fallen.'

Teilweise kann man von der Überwinterung im Erdreich auch noch getrocknete Erde an den Hinterbeinchen sehen.

Das Foto zeigt eine Hummelkönigin (Bombus terrestris/lucorum/magnus/cryptarum) auf einem weiß blühenden Heidekraut die ersten Pollen und den ersten Nektar des Jahres sammeln. Hinter dem Kopf sieht man eine Ansammlung von Milben, die die Hummelkönigin als Transportmittel benutzen.

Jetzt habe ich einmal eine Frage an die Insekten- besonders die Hummelexperten unter euch.
Vorhin fotografierte ich Hummeln in meinen Krokussen. Bei Durchsicht der Fotos fiel mir auf, dass es sich wohl um zwei Arten handelt. Ich bin mir nicht sicher und vermute Foto links Dunkle Erdhummel (B. terrestris )und rechtes Foto Baumhummel (B. hypnorum).
Was meinen die Experten/innen?

Dunkle Erdhummel (Bombus terrestris) ?

Eine Hummel ernährt sich von einer hellvioletten Blume mit sichtbarem gelbem Pollen. Die Blütenblätter der Blume sind offen und enthüllen die Staubblätter im Inneren. Grünes Gras und Moos bilden den Hintergrund.

Auch bei großer Hitze schweben Hummeln von Blüte zu Blüte, um Nektar zu sammen.

Dabei kann ihnen ganz schön heiß werden - nicht zuletzt durch ihren eigenen Flügelschlag. Denn die Muskeln arbeiten beim Schweben auf Hochtouren und produzieren zusätzliche Wärme. Im Magazin Proceedings of the Royal Society B schreibt jetzt ein Forschungsteam: Ihre Flügel wirken aber gleichzeitig wie ein eingebauter Ventilator.

As hoped, I managed to use some mud and light sand pigments here and there, rub a graphite pen over the bare metals, and also touch up the aiming sticks. The convoy light on the bottom left rear edge got painted off-white and then I used some of my Citadel Green Wash bought in 1996/1997. Actual photos coming somewhat later.

Als aufmunternde Erinnerung an sommerliche Tage heute eine Ackerhummel (Bombus pascuorum) bei ihrer Arbeit an einer Blüte des Hornschotenklees (Lotus corniculatus).

One track was easier and more fixable, and that happened to be the one that looked worse 😅 When the glue had cured enough for the tracks to stay in place I went to town with the sepia pin wash. I just love that part.

Despite the crew/diorama part being scrapped I glued the loading plank-shelf on the boxes. Maybe I'll glue a couple of shells and oddly empty cartridges on it or something. Or I'll leave it as is.

In a few days I should have hobby time for highlighting

Wheelsets and tracks on. I had made a mistake and the tracks snapped at the stupidest moment. What a disappointment.

Maybe I can fix them semiacceptably, maybe not. While lamenting my choices I glued the shovels in place and let the thing wait for a new day and fixes.

Today the calendar did indeed behave, and allowed me to play with the sepia oil wash. Having given the mess some half an hour to dry, I went back to clean excesses away. Normal surfaces were nicely simple, the no-slip floors noticeably less so. But I knew that already.

Now I guess I have to let it dry for a day or two before oiling more. The next step might be installing wheels and tracks, which also need some oils before I get to more weathery things.

Today's wrap-up brought me up to 1,5h of painting tiny dots on a scale model and that'd driven my partner insane 😄 I am happy with my second attempt at Hinterhalt-Tarnung. To go with it I decided to do a low-vis version of the Balkenkreuz, instead of white corners with a black interior and edges I just did the corners in black-grey.

Tomorrow, if calendar agrees, I'll get to do the sepia wash over the panel lines and whoknowswhatsits. "Awesome, awesome to the max."
