Home Heat Pumps: 2-day Installation Open Letter (2025) - Distress winter replacements of a gas boiler with heat pump are possible and needed... #heatpump #netZero #winter - m.earth.org.uk/heat-pump-2-day

It got down to -25C last night. At that temperature our electric furnace starts to take over from our heat pump and our heating falls to only 100% efficiency. Our oven's cleaning cycle is also about 100% efficient. So I had a free oven cleaning!

Latest energy bill is in. With the #heatpump we are buying more electricity. ÂŁ33 overall (import + less export). However, our gas bill for the same month last year ÂŁ70. Essentially our heating costs seem to have halved. Making use of that solar, battery and EV tariff. Pretty happy with that!

I’ve updated my Sunsynk Home Assistant dashboard to include our Octopus Charge EV charger. This meant moving from the compact card to the full layout and correctly visualising heat pump, immersion, and EV charging loads using CT clamps.

Some trial and error, but the end result is much clearer 👌

Saw lignite coal bricks/briquettes for indoor fireplaces today at the supermarket. More expensive per kWh heat than running a #heatpump with at least SCOP>2.5. I'm assuming 30ct/kWh here (my ⚡ price).

Why would anyone do this to their #IndoorAirQuality and their purse?!?

@diemkay recently installed a heat pump to replace an aging oil boiler. Very happy with it. To respond to some of the myths:

Expensive to run. Actually costing less per kWh than oil and gas.

Noisy. Can’t hear it over my neighbours oil boiler. Possibly a bit more noise than gas.

House will be cold. Actually not, just as warm and a nice warm feeling of not burning oil.

Water only warm. No just as hot.

They are different and work in a completely different way to conventional boilers that are still in the Stone Age comparatively. Failing to understand that is the cause of much misapprehension.

Just had solar and a battery installed. Even better.

Another myth is that a heat pump is still powered by coal. Not in the UK anyway. Electricity is a “perfect” fuel. Easily transported and generated by many different sources, mostly now renewable.

The inexpensive as a direct replacement for the is always going to be fraught with when it comes to evaluating value vs performance. What is not subject to debate however are the and benefits of no longer burning gas. These are . Home designs must evolve to maximize the benefit streams, along with by consumers. @primonatura

As a Romanian living in Poland I was surprised by how many people still use coal to heat their homes despite efforts to phase it out, and how many switched to eco pellets instead of heat pumps. For all its corruption ills, Romania has a better energy mix of nuclear, hydro, and more.

Anyway, we chose a #HeatPump because it made the most sense as we’ll continue to add solar panels and generate electricity for our own usage. For us, it was a rational choice and a matter of fact. We weren’t going to keep burning single use fuel.

But a heat pump was a relative novelty in our area. The questions we got most were:
“But isn’t it loud?”
“But can it actually heat up the whole house?”
And the main one: “Isn’t it expensive?”

A lot of these echoing the scaremongering we’ve heard so much about but hadn’t experienced until we moved out of an apartment.

Once we told them how much it cost, they were surprised that it’s about the same as they pay, BUT they have smaller homes than ours (by almost a third). If anything, we pay on the higher side because we have an old house in need of insulation (planning permission is taking ages), and don’t have solar panels yet.

Our bill may be high but it won’t be for ages once we add panels and insulate.

There are three kinds of #winter days:

1. Days when the heat pump can handle both floor heating and domestic hot water heating.
2. Days when I let it initially heat DHW in the morning, then switch to using an electric heating element, while the heat pump focuses on floor heating.
3. Days when I use electric DHW heating entirely, and let the heat pump start running floor heating from early morning hours.

Well our heatpump is on the fritz AGAIN! It seems every other year this thing is costing me in the vicinity of $1,200 - $1,500 in repairs and sometimes more, so where exactly are the savings. If I factor in the initial cost of the unit, add in the regular maintenance fees and repairs and divide that by the number of months, it comes out to roughly the same as if I had much more simple electric baseboards with programmable thermostats. I've realised over the 20+ years of owning a home with a Heat-pump/furnace hybrid system, it's just no worth it. Now have to make a choice, don't know what to do. :( #hvac #heating #heatpump #diy

To continue my #OctopusEnergy #HeatPump saga ...

MCS came round to "randomly" check our installation...

It failed...

Thankfully it's just because it's missing some insulation on some external pipework... But apparently #OctopusEnergy now has 2 weeks to fix it ....

In today’s #positivenews it’s been confirmed that the heating system I was repairing for the old guy who lives up the road is fully functioning. It’s a challenge to repair electronics without access to schematics and other data, thankfully this time I managed to get him sorted and get him warm again. #asManyWinsAsPossible #repair #repaircafe #aberdeenshire #Rego600 #IVT #heatpump
