wow I got 21 points on #HackerNews

#GoatCounter said I got 17 incoming visits from HackerNews. Given that all hackers use Firefox plus anti tracking and anti ad, I think these 17 are not hackers. Otherwise they would've blocked GoatCounter like my own browser.

But anyway, I enjoy poisoning other people's mind with unconventional things. Let's assume we have poisoned 1-2 minds for now.

Edit2: nevermind. 13 are macOS. They are not hackers. Maybe even not humans. Same goes for 6 which are Windows. But the Linux ones are probably real. Bots usually don't fake Linux user agent.

For simple statistics I use #GoatCounter. It's simple and #GPDR compatible by default. I also have experience with #Matomo. It's not GPDR compatible by default. You have to change the settings to anonymize data collections.

Matomo is far more advanced than GoatCounter. If you want to extensively see what happens on your website, Matomo is the way to go. Like you can track how many users stay 5 minutes in your website. And also realize which posts they like more, see bounce rate and so on.

Both GoatCounter and Matomo are blocked by anti tracking protections of Firefox.

Edit: If you are not sure which one is the right option for you, you can try hosted GoatCounter and see if you need more data from your visitors.

Started using #goatcounter and #formsparkio for #analytics and #forms on my #staticsite #hugo. Implemented #CloudflareTurnstile too for the form. Quite happy with the setup! Will try to get some comments working too maybe with #utterances, #commentario or #giscus.

So far so good. Created a new #Debian server a few days ago. Got the basic config done. So far I've moved my #11ty blog and #Forgejo instance over. I still need to move #Nextcloud, #Miniflux, and #GoatCounter before I can blow away the old #Ubuntu server.

I was considering going with a #FreeBSD server but I need to spend more time with FreeBSD before I'm comfortable with it.

Thought about #Arch too, but decided to keep it simple without overwriting the deployed OS.

Integrated #GoatCounter with my website at https://far.chickenkiller.com. When loading the script from some other origin, my adblocker blocks it. Now I'm embedding the entire script into page to see what will happen.

Edit: Just realized @nlnet has funded the project GoatCounter!

I added #GoatCounter to my #astro powered website following their documentation, but now I'm getting this console error:

Content-Security-Policy: The page’s settings blocked a script (script-src-elem) at https://stevefrenzel.dev/_astro/hoisted.GszST510.js from being executed because it violates the following directive: “script-src https://gc.zgo.at”

Tracking is working though but I'm no pro when it comes to this, so any help appreciated! 🙏

Cool. Got #GoatCounter installed and operational. Now I should be able to dump Google Analytics for Elles business site. And I think I'll use it for my blog site too. Mostly just curious to see if it actually gets hit by many bots or not. Still haven't gotten the nginx user agent blocks to work correctly yet.

Since #GoogleAnalytics became illegal in the #EU some great alternatives have come to the forefront. My personal favorite is the #FOSS solution called #Goatcounter. Sometimes it is worth not sitting in the lap of the large companies. :-)
