#Genuary

2026-02-04

#genuary is over. Time to reintroduce to my family, go back to work, shave...

Again, it was a most inspiring experience, especially diving into shaders which cost me a remarkable amount of time and distracted me from some other prompts. Nevermind. I have 11 more months now to work myself through the Perlin noise function.

Thanks to the team for inventing and publishing the inspiring pprompts and to the contributors for the beautiful, admirable , cool, funny, original... pics and sketches! I hope it won't take a year to see more from your work.

#genuary2026, day 28:
No libraries, no canvas, only HTML elements.

Playing with flex-box and modulation.

#creativecoding #genuary28 #genuary #html #mastoart

the whole game runs almost purely on #glsl shaders and is fully generative (phyics+cars+terrain) ...so perfect fit for #genuary31 #genuary2026 #genuary
sidenote: the whole binary has 6mb in total (~4 floppy discs ;-) and mostly due to exe&libs ;-P #gamedev

#31 GLSL Shader. Alternative creation.

This is another output during the play with values of the GLSL prompt for Genuary. Just posting those alternative renders I also liked.
It could have been also a post for "It's not a bug, it's a feature".

Do you like the other creation more than this one?

A grid of black and white squares but at their contact edges I added some blur/noise.

For #genuary22, "Pen plotter ready.", I got to use a real pen plotter at AlgoChill a week ago. Thanks to @laura_porta for bringing it along. #genuary genuary.art/

OH! I love this so much! Honestly, the best part of #genuary is seeing what everybody else creates. So many different ideas from the same challenges.

Yeah, I'm still exhausted from this year's, but I'm also already looking forward to next year's.

#27 Lifeform.

Here's an alternative crreation for the prompt of the 27th where I made the flying bee.

It's a stochastic L-system which I overlayed multiple times to get this kind-of-realistic look. L-systems are so awesome. I will create some with 3 dimensions and leaves and blossoms. Maybe I try to implement them in Blender for a generative grass, wood or something else in nature.

Now the Genuary is over and I plan to develop a challenge for March. If you want to brainstorm about such a challenge just write me.

A generative plant like a herb made with multiple L-systems.

Thanks EVERYBODY for making such an amazing GENUARY 2026!!

If you did all or most of the prompts, you should be very proud -- that is a significant achievement :)

And if you did a couple of them, most importantly I hope you were inspired and had fun!!

And that brings an end to Genuary!

Some reflections:
1) I am glad I started early. I am slow.
2) I made 19 new creations this year. Some prompts didn't resonate with me or were beyond my ability. And that's ok.
3) I got lazy as the month went on, and resorted to making minor changes to earlier work.

Much gratitude to everybody who shared their creations here. I'm always amazed at the ingenuity and creativity on display!

#31 GLSL Shader.

It's already #Gebruary but this prompt is one from #Genuary I post afterwards. But included in my overview from yesterday: tilde.zone/@w4v3/1159904664708

For GLSL there is no ready-to-go noise function, so I adapted the one from the well-known "Book of Shaders" and combined it with the rectangle grid but for each rectangle a seperate mapping. And it is definitely a base I will work on. Improving GLSL Shader language is also important for game development, for water shaders, sky. But you know all that already.

Have a wonderful and creative February!

It's a grid of rectangles each showing a cloud like noise-pattern in different brightness values. All in white, grey and black.

most of the work on this one was an experimental WebGL renderer backend, demonstrated w/ a return to one shape one color

It's been fun sharing these & seeing everyone else's all month! (and my HTML-only post will be coming at some point...)

Genuary 2026 Day 31: "GLSL day. Create an artwork using only shaders."

I know it's suggested that we play with Shaders. But I'm in a creative zone and not wanting to switch tools right now. So, I'm going back to an old project and play with it a bit more.

And that's it for #Genuary, until next year.

Made a collage! Thanks to @w4v3 for the idea.

This was a fun month! I used #tic80, plenty of #p5js, #glsl, #blender3d, and some #html.

I really enjoyed the variety of the #genuary prompts – does someone know how they are collected/picked?

A grid with many colorful pictures. In the corner, it says "blinry's Genuary 2026".
