The Elder Scrolls franchise starts here: Arena!

Released in Feb 1994, The Elder Scrolls: Arena was a sandbox CRPG unlike any other. It offered up the whole of Tamriel with hundreds of towns and dungeons to explore, crafting and spell creation systems - and laid the foundation for the franchise's lore.

Trivia: While the manual claims you can walk from one settlement to another, you actually can't; the area between them is infinite if you try. You need to use the fast travel system.

Beginning life as a gladiatorial combat game, the name Arena was later retconned into a nickname used by Tamriel's denizens for their world to reflect its harsh nature.

Having a read through some old Amiga mags and came across this ad that still managed to make my pulse quicken a bit. TFX! There was going to be no other sim like it, it was going to be the ultimate combat flight simulator.

I don't think I ever played it in the end and leapt right to EF2000.

Namco flew high at E3 1997 with this promotional poster for ACE COMBAT 2 on PlayStation.

Are any fedinauts within broadcast range of this toot fans of Namco's arcade flight sim series, as I am? AC2 is frequently named as peeps' favourite of the series (That's reserved for the PS2 incarnations for me) and yeah, it's a big step up from Air Combat, an arcade conversion with some extra gubbins for the home port.

Seeing old MicroProse ads like this one brings an extra smile to my lips now after listening to the audiobook version of Sid Meier's Memoir. 'Wild Bill' would strut about the offices in uniform whenever journos were due to drop by to reinforce the authenticity of their sims.

And believe it or not, F-15 Strike Eagle on NES is a surprisingly full featured flight sim.

Cannon Fodder print ad, 1993.

The game cover from which this ad was taken is Infamously sans a poppy after the Royal British Legion protested and threatened legal action against the whole Amiga world. In its place, a neat little optical illusion.

Cannon Fodder is a staunchly anti-war game, something that all of its tabloid press detractors at the time failed to take into account.
