Which snapshots could you delete?

<p>In last week’s <a href="https://eclecticlight.co/2026/01/31/explainer-snapshots-2/">Explainer on snapshots</a>, I stated that “you can safely remove all Time Machine snapshots from that volume except the most recent, which is also the smallest.” This article explains the reasoning behind that.</p>
<h4>Why delete snapshots?</h4>
<p>Time Machine and other backup utilities make local snapshots on the volumes they back up in addition to copying all changes to backup storage, normally on a different device like an external disk. Because of that, local snapshots are a bonus <a href="https://eclecticlight.co/2024/07/10/snapshots-arent-backups/">not a backup</a>. When a volume being backed up is running short of free space, one good method of freeing up space is therefore to delete some of those local snapshots.</p>
<p>Sometimes deleting just one snapshot can free up a lot of space, but estimating the amount likely to be returned is complicated, and to a degree not always readily predictable. If you know one of those snapshots has retained a very large file like a VM or macOS update, you may be able to get away with just deleting the single snapshot, but it’s more usual to need to delete as many as possible, typically just keeping one.</p>
<p>If you are going to retain one snapshot, then by far the smallest is likely to be the most recent, as that almost invariably contains the fewest changes from the current contents of the volume. The oldest snapshot is a

Modders have done a fantastic job with #FreeSpace, with high-detail models for every ship in the game, but from what I can see, Descent looks pretty much the same as it did 30 years ago.

I'm reminded of when some modders made some sweet high-resolution FMVs for #FreeSpace.

I think they used a modern video format, though, not the old Interplay MVE format that the original game used. Modders integrated #ffmpeg into the engine, so it can play FMVs in basically any format.

<h4>What’s on your Mac’s internal SSD?</h4>
<p>Internal boot disk layout is most complex in Apple silicon Macs, as theirs is divided into three partitions (or APFS containers). Two are hidden and contain pre-boot and other low-level support files, and amount to around 6 GB. The Macintosh HD partition then takes the lion’s share, the whole of the remainder. Even on a 256 GB SSD, that’s about 250 GB.</p>
<p>Volumes within Macintosh HD include:</p>

<li>System, just over 12 GB,</li>
<li>VM, varies in size according to how much virtual memory is swapped out to disk,</li>
<li>Preboot, just under 8 GB,</li>
<li>Recovery and others not normally mounted, a total of less than 2 GB,</li>

It's a bit of a shame that #StarTrekEnterprise never saw the Enterprise get a shield system. Could've been a fun “oh crap they have shields now" moment, or maybe a “oh crap our heroes will never survive this…but wait” moment.

The show did have several episodes where the Enterprise got some cool new equipment, but aside from an alternate-future episode, shields were not one of those upgrades.

I'm thinking of #FreeSpace, in which you don't have shields at first, and getting them is a big deal.
