#Minneapolis: #Dakota and #Lakota #Oyate Set Up Lodges Outside #WhippleBuilding

By #NiskíthePrayerCamp, #CensoredNews, Feb. 10, 2026

"Niskíthe Prayer Camp is honored to have been asked to share our tipis for this endeavor and we plan to work to supply our Dakota relatives in Minneapolis with supplies that they will need to continue this occupation and fulfill their demands for the return of #FortSnelling.

"Despite being visited yesterday by both state park rangers and Minneapolis police, our Dakota relatives survived their first night in the tipi encampment at Fort Snelling, a former internment (read 'concentration') camp for Indigenous people upon which the federal #ICE detention center in the Whipple Building is now situated. The Dakota want it back, and we plan to help them!

The Red Lake Nation said, 'The Dakota and Lakota Oyate have set up lodges outside the Whipple Building.' "

I’m reminded that the #Whipple building at #FortSnelling is the site of the #concentrationCamp for Native Americans back in the 19th century.

They’re not original thinkers, those minoritarians.

I remember a feeling of shock when I stopped at the visitors' center several years ago and saw the photograph, referring to the site as "the concentration camp."

You might say, I woke up.

(The settlers were scared out of their minds, to be sure. And this is what happened.)

Desperate times in Minnesota history.

"Whipple’s appeals during the U.S.–Dakota War trials earned him a national reputation as a spokesperson for Indian affairs. He served on a number of commissions, including the Sioux Commission (1876), the Northwest Indian Commission (1887), and the U.S. Board of Indian Commissioners (1895–1901).

"Late in his life, Whipple continued to expand the Protestant Episcopal Church in Minnesota. In the 1890s, he established a number of diocesan schools, including schools for Indian children. He remained in Faribault until his death, in 1901. He is the namesake of the Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building (1 Federal Drive, Fort Snelling), built in 1965."

'The Bishop Henry Whipple Federal Building, the squat, Brutalist federal government headquarters for U.S. Immigration Court and the ongoing Immigration and Customs Enforcement campaign, has been the recent site of clashes between parka-wearing protesters and masked federal agents.

'The Whipple Building isn’t part of Historic Fort Snelling, but it sits on a small, unincorporated swath of land known as the Fort Snelling Unorganized Territory. The history of that land, including the first arrival of the U.S. government to this area, is not an easy one.

'“For good and for ill,” said Bill Convery, director of research at the Minnesota Historical Society, “Fort Snelling lies at the heart of a lot of Minnesota history.”'

#OglalaSioux Tribe says three tribal members arrested in #Minneapolis are in #ICE detention

by GRAHAM LEE BREWER
Updated 8:30 PM EST, January 13, 2026

"The president of Oglala Sioux Tribe in South Dakota on Tuesday called for the immediate release of tribal members who were detained at a homeless encampment by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Minnesota last week.

"Three of the four Oglala Sioux Tribe members who were arrested in Minneapolis on Friday have been transferred to an ICE facility at #FortSnelling, President #FrankStarComesOut said in a statement released with a memorandum sent to federal immigration authorities.

" 'The Oglala Sioux Tribe’s memorandum makes clear that ‘tribal citizens are not aliens’ and are ‘categorically outside immigration jurisdiction,' Star Comes Out said. 'Enrolled tribal members are citizens of the United States by statute and citizens of the Oglala Sioux Nation by treaty.'

"Details about the circumstances that led to their detention were unclear.

"In the memorandum sent to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Star Comes Out said the when tribal nation reached out to the agency it was provided with only the first names of the men. Homeland Security refused to release more information, unless the tribe 'entered into an immigration agreement with ICE.' "

#OglalaLakota President Refuses #ICE Manipulation and Deal -- as Three #Lakota Remain #Disappeared at #FortSnelling

By #BrendaNorrell, #CensoredNews, Jan. 15, 2026

MINNEAPOLIS -- "ICE's violence continued on Wednesday night with another #ICEShooting. Three #Lakotas arrested by ICE remain disappeared at Fort Snelling, the long time site of the genocide of #Dakota people.

"In the search for the three disappeared Lakotas, Oglala Lakota President #FrankStarComesOut says he refuses to cut a deal with ICE, which ICE is demanding to release more information.

"Meanwhile, a whistleblower has leaked the secret ICE operations underway -- including the targeting of #activists, recruiting informants in jail, and 'Operation A' exploiting migrants for intelligence.

"Both the #TohonoOodham Nation government, and #Navajo President #BuuNygren, play roles by recruiting and promoting ICE agents."

Memorial Day

Fort Snelling National Cemetery Minneapolis Minnesota

Memorial Day (originally known as Decoration Day) is a federal holiday in the United States for honoring and mourning the U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. From 1868 to 1970, it was observed on May 30. Since 1970, it is observed on the last Monday of May.

Many people visit cemeteries and memorials on Memorial Day to honor and mourn those who died while serving in the U.S. military. Many volunteers place American flags on the graves of military personnel in national cemeteries. Memorial Day is also considered the unofficial beginning of summer in the United States.

The first national observance of Memorial Day occurred on May 30, 1868. Then known as Decoration Day, the holiday was proclaimed by Commander in Chief John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic to honor the Union soldiers who had died in the Civil War. This national observance was preceded by many local ones between the end of the Civil War and Logan's declaration.
