Tormenta histórica deja apagones y muertes en Estados Unidos

El temporal deja más de un millón de hogares sin electricidad en EU, principalmente en el sur.

Washington.- La gran tormenta de hielo y nieve que ha afectado a dos tercios de la geografía estadounidense ha dejado este domingo a más de un millón de usuarios sin electricidad, sobre todo en el sur, y se ha cobrado la vida de al menos cinco personas en todo el país por hipotermia, según informaron medios locales.

Datos de la web especializada poweroutage.us muestran 1.045.496 cortes en el suministro.

El hielo está causando estragos en el sur, y los cortes de energía están afectando especialmente a Tennessee, donde más de 338.000 usuarios, aproximadamente el 10 % del estado, se encuentran sin electricidad.

Poco menos de 100.000 usuarios estaban sin electricidad en Texas, mientras que en Luisiana y Misisipi había alrededor de 145.000 y 175.000 usuarios sin servicio, respectivamente, según poweroutage.us.

En las ciudades de Washington y Baltimore no se han reportado fallos en el suministro significativos.

Las temperaturas extremas amenazan a la infraestructura

La tormenta, la mayor por envergadura registrada en EE.UU. según muchos expertos, descargó importantes cantidades de hielo y nieve a primera hora del domingo en la región del Medio Atlántico tras hacer lo propio en el Medio Oeste y sur del país.

El temporal ha dejado calles y carreteras difícilmente transitables desde Texas, pasando por Oklahoma o Tennessee, hasta Pensilvania y Nueva York, debido a la cantidad de nieve y hielo.

Según The Washington Post, la tormenta ha dejado al menos cinco muertos: dos en Luisiana y tres en Nueva York, todas por hipotermia.

Las temperaturas aún más bajas que se esperan en los próximos días, con mínimas el martes en la costa Este que estarán en torno a los 5 grados fahrenheit (-15 grados centígrados), mantienen a las autoridades alerta debido a la formación de gruesas capas de hielo y los efectos que tengan en servicios e infraestructuras básicas.

A su vez, la secretaria de Seguridad Nacional, Kristi Noem, ha pedido a la población de los más de 20 estados que han activado protocolos de emergencia que se evite salir de casa y ha asegurado que el Gobierno Federal está cooperando con estados y compañías eléctricas para agilizar reparaciones de la red eléctrica lo antes posible ante el frío aún más intenso que se avecina.

Cancelación de vuelos a causa del temporal

El temporal, que provocó el sábado unos 4.000 vuelos cancelados con origen y destino en EE.UU., ha causado de momento hoy otras 10.000 correspondencias canceladas en aeropuertos de todo el país, según el portal especializado Flightaware.

Además, más de 2.000 vuelos programados para el lunes ya han sido cancelados.

Para el lunes por la mañana, las mayores acumulaciones probablemente se encontrarán en una zona que incluye partes de Pensilvania, Nueva York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Nuevo Hampshire y Vermont.

El alcalde de Nueva York, Zohran Mamdani, anunció que el lunes no habrá clases presenciales. «Será un día de clases a distancia para las escuelas de la ciudad de Nueva York con el fin de garantizar la seguridad de todos ante las condiciones climáticas adversas», anotó el alcalde en un comunicado. –sn–

Huh that was an odd login sequence for the #FlightAware app just now...

I clicked on the email login link in the app.

Then my Android device auto populated my username (not my email).

Then it took me to another screen where it said to check my email for a code.

An email came with a one time code.

I inserted that.

Then it took me to another screen and this time asked for the onetime code from my authenticator app.

I entered that and it logged me in.

It never asked for my password. And it does not have a passkey setup.

Huh and I just logged in using the same process from their desktop site on Windows 10.

I guess this is a new passwordless way to login?
