I dreamt that I was in a forest fire. I was safe because I was a ghost, but no one else was. The trees blazed all around me, and I felt the heat of their passing. Animals fled past me, wide-eyed and panicked, predator and prey united in terror. Firefighters sprayed water that turned to steam. Flames jumped from crown to crown. The wind was hot and stank of ash and endings.

I walked unhurt but not unmarked to the edge of a sullen lake whose entire surface had gone black with ash. I watched its lazy undulations for a while, like a pool of oil disturbed by unseen forces.

So, a few updates: First, I've started writing again, working title is The Vagabond Knight. It takes place roughly a decade after my initial WIP, same main character, but with a lot of things that have changed from my original outline. Featured below is a few snippets from the first draft of chapter 2, from the perspective of Alexander Martineau (d'Martineau? Sorry French speakers lol), one of two or three main POV's in the story.

Anyhow is a linguistic segue –
How appropriate that it is now, anyhow,
That I am in the midst of
A slide, a shift in how I am, who I am,
Where I am, and what I am.
I'm incomplete, ill-formed
I'm undone, re-done…
not done.
