È un Pasolini che si abbandona a momenti di vera e propria gioia quello che tra il giugno e l’agosto del 1959, al volante di una Fiat 1100, percorre la lunga strada di sabbia, da Ventimiglia a Palmi e poi, fino al comune siciliano più meridionale, per risalire infine la costa orientale e arrivare a Trieste.
A La Spezia, da dove parte per San Terenzo e Lerici, sente che sta per avere inizio una fra le domeniche più belle della sua vita; a Livorno, non lascerebbe mai «l’enorme lungomare, pieno di ragazzi e marinai, liberi e felici»; e, finalmente, al Circeo: «Il cuore mi batte di gioia, di impazienza, di orgasmo. Solo, con la mia mille-cento e tutto il Sud davanti a me. L’avventura comincia».

A commissionargli il viaggio è stata la rivista «Successo», che pubblicherà il reportage in tre puntate fra luglio e settembre, e Pasolini, spiaggia dopo spiaggia, incontra amici intellettuali e personaggi noti, si lascia incantare dalla gente semplice dei paeselli più remoti (a Portopalo «la gente è tutta fuori, ed è la più bella gente d’Italia, razza purissima, elegante, forte e dolce») e, portandosi in giro il suo entusiasmo per la scoperta, il suo sguardo emozionato e insieme acuto di futuro regista, annota scorci e impressioni tanto potenti da restituirci un quadro dell’Italia di allora: un’Italia in cui il boom economico, solo presagito, non riesce ancora ad avere la meglio sulla felicità del sogno pasoliniano d’innocenza.
