I'm not really sure where to begin with this but I think/feel that I need to tell my story here otherwise I don't really see much point. It's for my own sake really but if it also helps others, or people find it interesting and deeper connections are formed then that's even better.

I've been stuck for some time contemplating how I want to present my artwork. I want this space to be more than just a cold, sterile gallery wall. It has been an inward journey of self-reflection, discovery, transformation and healing. The mandala really is a powerful tool and my hope is that others might benefit from creating, colouring and contemplating them as I have.

I started making mandalas in 2017. I have always had a fascination with symmetry, pattern and ornamentation. What inspired my first mandala was an old blue ballpoint pen drawing I did of a face with a tribal style tattoo image on it. I used to use this image as my avatar back in the old forum days. It's only a little sketch but formed part of a number of drawings I did roughly 30 years ago that I termed 'Inner Self-Portraits'. Not realistic in any way but more subconscious representations.

I eventually re-drew the tattoo part of the sketch in an early version of Adobe Illustrator. Many years later this became the main element I used in my first mandala.

Two dimensional vector drawing/reproduction of the tattoo image from the sketch copied into four. Visited the optometrist today. Still 20/20, but I've got a slight astigmatism, so it's a good chance I'll be needing glasses at some point (if they gestapo doesn't haul me off to the gas chamber first).

The doctor was kind of enough to send me the pictures she took of my retinas. I thought they looked sort of celestial and pretty neat.

a photograph, kindly provided by my optometrist, of my right retina. it resembles a stellar nebula. my optic nerve is visible just to the right of center; it glows yellow with optic energy. the retina itself is a mottled patchwork of reds and browns with thin, dark red ocular vasculature spread throughout like the legs of a deep sea spider crab. in the bottom right of the image is a small, circular section of the retina that is a lighter shade than the surrounding tissue; this is a 'retinal window,' an area where the topmost layer of tissue is thinner allowing more light to reach the deeper layers. it's a real sexy retina, if I do say so myself.

just starting to snow to mixed precip- it is basically feeling like evil incarnate out there and it has yet to really ramp up - 6-noon tomorrow will be the worst the temps are going to be cold like 22 degrees but lots of warm air aloft, it will finish up with thunder ice and rain then a flash freeze #eye of sauron

Eye Filmmuseum gaat vanaf 7 maart de film Sinners van regisseur Ryan Coogler op 70mm-formaat draaien. Dat heeft de bioscoop in Amsterdam donderdag bekendgemaakt. Eye is het enige theater in de Benelux waar Sinners op dit bijzondere formaat wordt vertoond.
