#UK #DVLA van rental and driving licence sharing. Security? How do you spell that?
Am I going mad?

I'm renting a van for 3 days, and I gave them a single use "licence check code" that lets them see every detail up-to-date.

Now they want me to e-mail scans of both sides of my licence card. "It's standard procedure", they say.

I thought the whole point of the single use check code (which is what bus and transportation companies use with employee drivers) was to avoid the security risk of e-mailing everything needed to produce a fake licence?

200 recycled laptops donated to young people in Swansea

Partnership tackles digital exclusion

The devices, refurbished and donated by DVLA, are being distributed by Swansea Council to children and young people supported by social services, youth and education teams, as well as students in schools and colleges. Some have also been provided to people accessing the council’s Domestic Abuse Hub.

The scheme, launched in 2021, is part of the UK Government’s IT Reuse for Good charter, which encourages organisations to repurpose equipment to promote digital inclusion. DVLA was one of the first signatories.

Council welcomes latest donation

Council Leader Rob Stewart said the partnership was already making a difference:

“We were the first council to partner with DVLA on their innovative Digital Inclusion Scheme, with hundreds of pupils at our schools benefiting over the last few years.

“This latest donation of 200 laptops has been put to very good use, supporting young people and families who access our services, including looked after children and young people working hard to secure training and employment. This will make a real and positive difference to them, and I’m proud that the council and DVLA have worked together to achieve this.”

DVLA: ‘Helping people chase their goals’

Tim Moss CBE, DVLA Chief Executive, said:

“It’s fantastic to see how our Digital Inclusion Scheme is helping young people across Swansea. Not everyone has access to a laptop at home, so being able to pass on our refurbished kit means more people can get online, learn new skills, and chase their goals. We’re proud to work with Swansea Council on this – it’s a great way to support the community and make a real difference.”

Environmental benefits

As well as supporting digital access, the scheme extends the life of laptops and reduces the number of devices sent for disposal, contributing to DVLA’s carbon reduction targets.

All donated devices are securely cleansed to government standards and provided with operating system licences through the Microsoft Authorised Refurbisher programme.

In order to notify the #DVLA of a medical condition, you have to download a PDF, physically print it, complete 7 pages of detailed information, then send it in the post.

Oh but you can only get the form online in the first place, unless you happen to live in Swansea.

Are they being intentionally perverse for some intractable legal reason, or are they still updating their systems since the 80s?

Gov.uk #DVLA question - wife is trying to renew licence and it’s a Beta service which keeps failing. How does one access the old stable service? Or is the Beta all there is?

I've got big feet and I was driving a tiny car that I'd never driven before, and the clutch pedal slipped on my foot at a roundabout, and the delay made it into the list of reasons why I didn't pass my test.
fuck em, I'll cycle.

The commercial UK company selling #medical #cannabis and organising legal prescriptions (its not impossible even in UK!) is legit and /partly/ correct - first two points are accurate but third has a grey area. Reality (confirmed by many comments on the FB sponsored post) is #DVLA are often notified by patients GP - patient often has to jump through extra hoops to keep their #driving #licence and #insurance premiums will be loaded.

#Police can still stop them at roadside controls - if swab comes up positive (which is very likely) they can still be nicked on /suspicion/ of drug driving - since 2015 in England/Wales and 2019 Scotland system operates as "guilty until proven innocent" - patient will have to argue their case in Court and have bail hanging over their head for *months*!

As a medical “" patient, you are protected by law:
- Protection from conviction for possession - just show your prescription in its original packaging.
- Your employer cannot discriminate against you.
- Protection from drug driving offences - as long as you're not intoxicated.

UK #DVSA #MOT data really is top quality 🤣 .

make: 'PEUGEOT',
model: '307',
fuelType: 'Steam',

For the same reg #DVLA say "fuelType": "PETROL" which is sadly more believable.

Story time people....

I have a HGV licence but haven't driven trucks for about 10 years. My photo licence has expired and i am unable to renew it online as the HGV bit now needs a medical update.
I've contacted the #DVLA to voluntarily surrender my HGV licence so i don't have to do this again... However i need a form which requires a GP sign off to surrender the licence even though its not for medical reasons

UK to Gradually Switch to Right-Side Driving by 2026Government announces phased transition to align with global standards

In a landmark decision, the UK government has officially confirmed that the country will transition from left-side to right-side driving by 2026. The Department for Transport (DfT) announced the change early this morning, citing alignment with international road safety standards and the potential to boost trade and tourism.

Phased Implementation Plan

According to Transport Secretary Daniel Whitehall, the transition will take place in carefully planned phases to minimize disruption.

Phase 1 (2025) – Lorries and buses will begin using the right side of the road on all motorways and major A-roads.

Phase 2 (Early 2026) – Taxis and private hire vehicles in major cities will switch.

Phase 3 (Mid-2026) – Personal vehicles and motorcycles will fully transition nationwide.

The switch will be accompanied by major infrastructure upgrades, including new road markings, revised signage, and public awareness campaigns. "We recognize this is a significant cultural shift, but the benefits outweigh the challenges," Whitehall said.
