#Fukushima Now – Current State of Post-Accident Operations at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (August 2024 to January 2025)

by Citizens' Nuclear Information Center · Published April 2, 2025 · Updated April 2, 2025

By Matsukubo Hajime

Excerpt: State of #ContaminatedWater

"Contaminated water countermeasures at #FukushimaDaiichi #NuclearPower Station (#FDNPS) can be broadly divided into three areas: 1) Reduction of #groundwater flowing into buildings, 2) Reduction of #ContaminatedWater flowing into the sea, and 3) Reduction of the toxicity of contaminated water.

"Countermeasures implemented to reduce water inflow into the buildings are, from higher elevations downward, (A) Pumping up groundwater at the groundwater bypass and releasing it into the sea (953,611m3 up to February 10, 2025), B) Installation of a frozen earth barrier (on-land water barrier, total length roughly 1,500m) surrounding FDNPS Units 1-4, C) Pumping up water at the subdrains and releasing it into the sea (1,801,404m3 up to February 9), and D) Paving of the site with asphalt to suppress permeation of rainwater into the soil. Measures to prevent the discharge of contaminated water into the ocean include A) Groundwater leakage prevention by a steel water barrier on the sea-side and B) Pumping up of groundwater dammed up behind the sea-side water barrier from the well points and groundwater drains. Due to these measures, the volume of contaminated water discharged, 540m3/day in May 2014, fell to 80m3/day in FY2023, and was below 100m3/day in FY2024.

"In the reduction of the toxicity of contaminated water, cesium and strontium are removed, and after the removal of impurities using a reverse osmosis (RO) membrane, the multi-radionuclide removal equipment (ALPS – Advanced Liquid Processing System) then removes 62 radionuclides [NOT COMPLETELY!!!]. The water is then stored in tanks (containing 1,297,190m3 as of January 30, 2025. However, due to past equipment #malfunctions and operational policies, around 64% of the stored water exceeds the notification concentration).

"Oceanic release of the ALPS-treated contaminated water began on August 24, 2023, a total of 78,285m3 being released in ten batches by January 2025. Table 2 shows the amounts released in each release and the total amount of tritium released. The concentration is gradually rising. One further release is scheduled during FY2024. In addition, roughly 15,720m3 of water remain in buildings, and a further 8,946m3 of strontium-treated water, etc., 5,644m3 of water treated by RO, and 9,463m3 of concentrated wastewater, etc. also exist onsite."

'Forever chemicals' used on Jersey's potato crops

Alex Green - BBC News
February 4, 2025

"So-called #ForeverChemicals are present in at least four #AgriculturalSprays used in Jersey, including one used on #PotatoCrops, the island's environment minister has said.

"In the States Assembly, Deputy Steve Luce was quizzed on what actions, if any, were being implemented to reduce contamination by sprays containing PFAS in the island's water and environment.

"The minister was also asked to provide a timeline for 'achieving measurable progress' in addressing the issue.

"Luce said his initial discussions with the industry were focused on finding an alternative and stopping the use of such sprays 'as soon as possible'.
Health issues

"PFAS, used in #FirefightingFoam, leaked into the area by the airport's fire training ground in the early 1990s.

"The chemicals, branded forever chemicals because they take a long time to break down, are found in a small quantity in most people's blood, and research is ongoing to determine if higher levels can lead to various health problems.

"After the foam was confirmed to be in #DrinkingWater in 1993, the island's government and the #airport, which it owns, stopped the use of the foam and offered to install new bore holes for affected residents.

"People living in the area believe the #ContaminatedWater damaged crops and caused a litany of ongoing serious health issues.

"The PFAS Scientific Advisory Panel, which makes recommendations, was set up by Public Health in May 2023.

"Members met islanders who participated in the blood-testing programme and, in a draft report, recommended therapeutic phlebotomy for those affected.

"Therapeutic phlebotomy is a procedure that involves removing some blood from the body to lower the concentration of PFAS.

"In September 2024, the advisory panel published a report outlining the impact PFAS exposure had on health.

"The panel found exposure to certain PFAS was associated with #ElevatedCholesterol levels, and said there was evidence suggesting a probable increase in kidney and testicular #cancers among those exposed to certain PFAS materials."

I'm glad that Status Coup is still keeping on top of this and continuing to note that Senator Sherrod Brown, Governor Dewine, and Senator JD Vance all did absolutely nothing helpful about this and even the state's EPA covered it up to protect capital...

More ongoing water issues that mainstream media won't cover.

Syatus Coup has been covering the issues regarding Flint, East Palestine, and Kalamazoo, as well, as this one... pertaining to corporate polluters... they also covered the protests on the pipelines. I feel a bit more educated every time I see their videos on these atrocious crimes against humanity.

It's so bad in #Mexico, even the #police are #protesting!

Mexico’s #drought, #heatwave and #WaterShortage are so bad even police are blocking traffic in #protest

AP, May 22, 2024

"Mexico’s drought, heatwave and water shortages have gotten so bad that even police blocked traffic in protest Wednesday.

"In recent months, residents of some #MexicoCity neighborhoods have regularly taken to forming #HumanChains to block boulevards to demand water. In April, complaints about #ContaminatedWater sparked a weeks-long crisis in one upscale neighborhood.

"Normally, police seek to redirect traffic, but on Wednesday some officers were themselves manning a protest blockade, near the capital’s iconic Independence Monument.

"The officers stood blocking six lanes of traffic, saying their barracks hadn’t had water for a week, and that the bathrooms were unusable.

"'We don’t have water in the bathrooms,' said one female officer who would not give her name for fear of reprisals, adding that conditions in the barracks were intolerable. 'They make us sleep on the floor,' she said."
