Saving earth and rock rings from ubiquitous bulldozers
Cultural landscapes and braided knowledge
Building a more holistic understanding of people, place and Country

"Aboriginal rings are circular, earth (or rock) features that are preserved at increasingly fewer locations across eastern Australia today."

"Braided knowledge approaches build authentic, respectful and reciprocal partnerships with Indigenous community that involve their participation in all aspects."

"...Braided knowledge approaches are lacking from studies of large, circular features known as Aboriginal earth (or rock) rings in Australia. These rings are only known to occur in Queensland, New South Wales (NSW) and Victoria. It is estimated that over 400 rings once existed in NSW and Queensland, but only a quarter remain today (Bowdler Citation2001). Many rings were destroyed following European colonisation, and land development, and those that do remain are vulnerable and fragile (Marks Citation1968; Ponosov Citation1965:69–70; Strong Citation2016; see also Bashta Citation2016). The word bora has been adopted broadly from the language of the Gamilaroi people of NSW and southern Queensland to describe both rings and associated ceremonies across eastern Australia (Fuller et al. Citation2013:30)."

@NatureMC
An interesting episode on climate shift baselines. Thankyou.

Australia still coming to terms with our first nation indigenous knowledge encompassed in oral tradtition of story lines and songlines and Caring for Country. A continuous culture that stretches back over 60,000 years, of Storylines that encompass last ice age ecosystem changes and sea level rise from 12.000 years ago. Knowledge of managing wildfire, vegetation and wildlife.

Thanks for updating us on Bilbo.🐕

This week #AdriftLab was joined by Tanya, a #TradtionalOwner from Kepa Kurl/Esperance. We traveled to northern Australia (☀️Tanya’s home Country, yay!) and this morning, we flew to a remote #island to undertake a damage assessment after #CycloneIlsa. Sad to say, there was significant mortality of the breeding #seabirds with very few individuals of an #endemic species left alive 🐦🏝🌀 @SeabirdSentinel #EsperanceTjaltjraak #IndigenousRangers #CaringForCountry #ProtectWhatYouLove

Another day bashing through extremely dense Melaleuca in search of #malleefowl with #EsperanceTjaltjraak #IndigenousRangers. After getting whipped in the face by branches for 5 hrs, Im not able to include any quotes from the team because they all included curse words 🤬 (and a lot of grunting!). Good thing no one needed to record the “sounds of the bush” 🤣🤣🤣 And no, we didn’t see any birds 🙄 Thankfully, these hard-earned data are part of a new MSc #student #research project in collaboration with #RMIT University - stay tuned for exciting updates!

This week our ETNTAC #IndigenousRangers are supporting the 2023 #BushBlitz event in #Esperance. I was fortunate to spend the day with this epic human ⬇️ totally in awe of his #dreamtime stories & the ID skills of the trapdoor #spider expert #AdriftLab #NewSpecies #CaringForCountry @adriftlab

Sadly this has largely been ignored by settler #Australians since we arrived here 235 years ago but is now more important than ever.

Yesterday was spent with the Traltjraak #IndigenousRangers amongst the beautiful salmon gums (Eucalyptus salmonophloia) collecting 2kg of seed from native trees as part of a large-scale #ZeroCarbon #revegetation project to restore paddocks to bush land. Exhausted but also rejuvenated 💙🌳 (📸 of native Eremophila) #CaringForCountry #LandForWildlife

@discoveringnature @HiRezCanDo
We call it caring for country, and it comes from Australian First nation knowledge and lore. We have still got a long way to go with reconciliation and treaty with Indigenous nations and part of that journey is understanding indigenous cultural perspectives and knowledge and adopting the holistic values of #CaringforCountry generally here in Australia with regards to nature and land use.. aiatsis.gov.au/sites/default/f
