#BillAtkinson

This isn't just a #geek #portrait in context of #computer #graphics, it's a hommage to #BillAtkinson and his contributions to #WYSIWYG #DTP and #CGI. As #Apple employee no.51 he created #MacPaint on top of #QuickDraw, #Hypercard and much more. TY and #RIP

The #vector #graphic was made in #SVG with #Inkscape running on #Linux, not #Adobe #Illustrator on #MacOS or #OSX.
Portrait of Bill Atkinson with Apple Mac under the arm, in front of a Lisa computer, with icons, Apple logos and a classic Macintosh IIfx all arranged on an orange background with Inkscape.

@jlw_the_jobber @cameron_bosch

#BillAtkinson didn't work so hard to figure out how to draw rounded rectangles for them to be abused like this.

How gauche. :P

"Tony Stark was able to build this in a cave with a bunch of scraps!!" meme from Iron Man 1

Left caption (scientist): "People trying to build efficient GUI/graphics libraries today"

Right caption (Obadiah Stane): "Bill Atkinson was able to do this in in 1982 with a 5Mhz processor and 128k RAM!!!"

Bill Atkinson: Polaroids showing the Evolution of the Lisa GUI via Computer History Museum [Video] [Shared]

Bill Atkinson shows and explains his binder of Polaroid photos which he took during the development of the Lisa, documenting the evolution of its graphical user interface.

The image features a bald man wearing a black puffer vest over a light blue shirt. He is positioned on the right side of the image, with a neutral, blurred background. On the left side, there is a red vertical banner with the text "CHM" in white, repeated vertically. The man appears to be speaking, with his mouth slightly open. The lighting is soft and even, highlighting the man's features without creating harsh shadows. The overall composition is simple, with the man and the text being the main focal points.

The blank canvas of MacPaint, the moment you open it, still feels like pure magic to me. People keep creating incredible things with it—but just a second before any of that exists, there’s only that quiet, perfect white space. Surrounded by just the tools you’ll need—nothing less, nothing more.

@corvus

#AtkinsonDithering looks really nice, and it's just a tweak on the classic #FloydSteinberg dithering.

RIP #BillAtkinson, the dude did so much for us, and most people don't know who he was. :/

@vl_tone

Color cycling FTW. Lost art!!!

Also, it's a much closer analogy to the moving beer signs that inspired #BillAtkinson to create the "marching ants" effect in #MacPaint.

@lefebvre My first PC. I learned to program data strings into displaying graphics using BASIC commands, plotting my ideas out on graph paper first.

Then in 1984 saw a Mac running MacPaint. Everything changed after that.

MacPaint, an early graphics program for the first Macintosh - released by Apple, written by Apple employee Bill Atkinson, a key member of the original Macintosh development team who would go on to develop HyperCard, a multimedia visual programming system that presaged the visual Internet. RIP King.

As sad as it is to remember Bill Atkinson’s legacy in the wake of his passing, it makes me deeply happy that this was the post that resonated most. Humanity, empathy, and respect are still the best algorithm. Give yourself a tap, #Mastodon.

Computer engineer and Apple veteran William "Bill" Atkinson has died of pancreatic cancer at age 74. Atkinson created the QuickDraw graphics engine, which made the Macintosh interface possible and, says @arstechnica's @benjedwards, "transformed abstract computer science into intuitive visual experiences that millions would use daily."

"I say this with no hyperbole: Bill Atkinson may well have been the best computer programmer who ever lived," wrote veteran Apple analyst @gruber on his Daring Fireball blog. "Without question, he's on the short list. What a man, what a mind, what gifts to the world he left us." Here's Edwards' story; find Gruber's full tribute at the second link.

Ever since I heard about Bill Atkinson’s passing, I’ve been diving into everything I can find about HyperCard. Today, while the world was glued to WWDC25, I was off exploring alternate timelines—asking ChatGPT what HyperCard and the world might have become if it had never been discontinued. It was a blast. šŸ’„

Thanks to Bill Atkinson and QuickDraw, I got excited about writing software that created graphic output and was easy to use. And thanks to the Mac, I would soon leave architecture behind and start a new career.

A graph of Land Use categories, from a grad student project in late 1986.A 2D map of a city with primary and secondary streets, showing land usage. This was sort of like SimCity, 3 years before SimCity.About box for Palladio, a grad school project to programmatically draw Palladian villas.A dialog box for setting parameters that will generate a Palladian villa.
