¿Sabían que la muñeca #Barbie, presentada por primera vez el 9 de marzo de 1959 en la Feria del Juguete de Nueva York, no fue un diseño original desde cero, sino una adaptación de una muñeca alemana para adultos llamada Bild Lilli? 

Ruth Handler, cofundadora de Mattel, descubrió a Lilli durante un viaje a Suiza en 1956. A diferencia de los muñecos infantiles de la época que representaban bebés, Lilli era un personaje de una tira cómica del periódico Bild-Zeitung, diseñada con una estética de "mujer fatal" y vendida originalmente en estancos y tiendas de bromas para hombres. 

Handler compró tres ejemplares y, junto con el diseñador Jack Ryan, modificó el diseño para adaptarlo al mercado infantil estadounidense. El cambio fundamental no fue solo estético, sino de concepto: Barbie permitía a las niñas proyectar su futuro como mujeres independientes con diversas profesiones, rompiendo el esquema del juego basado exclusivamente en la maternidad. 

La controversia legal no se hizo esperar. Greiner & Hausser, la empresa alemana fabricante de Bild Lilli, demandó a Mattel por infracción de patente. El conflicto se resolvió en 1964 cuando Mattel compró los derechos de copyright y patentes de la muñeca alemana por aproximadamente 21,600 dólares, cesando así la producción de Lilli para asegurar el monopolio global de Barbie.

Artrocity Studio presents Centaur Ken and Centauride Barbie. Ken sports a broadsword, while Barbie has a bow with arrows. They seem quite happy with each other; one wonders if someday there might be a colt...

To create this project I cut the heads off hard plastic horses I bought at a thrift store, and I broke the legs off the dolls (also thift store finds). I then used an adjustable heat gun set to 550 degrees Fahrenheit to soften the hard plastic to mold it around the doll torsos. I used leather gloves to protect my hands from the heat, as well as safety goggles and a respirator for protection from any chemical fumes released by the heat. I used super glue to fix the torsos in place to the horse bodies. This took about an hour to accomplish.

Finally, I used paper mache to create tunics for both torsos. The broadsword and scabbard are all cardboard. Barbie's bow and quiver are also cardboard. The arrows are toothpicks trimmed and glued together. Painted with acrylic paint. The tunics, weapons, and painting took about a week to complete.
