Still thinking about how nearly 90% of the approximately 1 million people who voted in my county last month voted with their mail-in ballots. Not only does that strengthen #democracy by increasing access and shielding voters from intimidation or worse by federal officers—think of the savings arising from the greatly reduced need for polling places staffed by humans. Win-win-win.

The Orange County Registrar's office published these stats this week:

Of 999,918 ballots cast by voters [in Orange County in Nov 2025] and counted, 88.2% of voters cast a Vote-By-Mail ballot and 11.8% cast an in-person ballot at one of 66 #Vote Centers throughout the county.

Overall turnout was about 50%, not terrible for an off-cycle #election with only a single question on the ballot. Every voter in California receives a #ballot they can return in the mail or via a drop box. That's 23 MILLION ballots, voter information guides, reminder postcards. . . an amazing feat of organization and logistics.

And the results are undeniable. The success and popularity of Vote-By-Mail is undeniable. Vote-By-Mail offers accessibility to people with disabilities; to minorities fearing kidnap and possible murder at the hands of #ICE; and to any voter who simply prefers to sit at their kitchen table, make their choices, and send off their ballots. 1/
