"Country Doctor (Night Call)," Horace Pippin, 1935.
I've talked about Pippin (1888-1946) before; he was a self-taught Black American artist who took up art as a sort of therapy after being injured in WWI. He painted scenes of everyday Black American life, and what he lacked in formal training, he made up for with passion, depth, a remarkable eye for design, and a flair for storytelling and depicting people's lives.
Here we have a scene in a wooded area in the midst of a snowstorm....but a man is slowly leading a horse, pulling a wagon, through the storm. It's not just a mere depiction of a winter scene, but a tribute to the resilience and dedication of a rural doctor, trudging through the storm to someone in need.
Pippin's most popular work are his depictions of Black life, many drawn from his childhood. He also did religious paintings and some historical paintings, mostly of his WWI experiences, but also a noted depiction of John Brown going to his execution, based on descriptions from his grandmother, who witnessed it. I find his work delightful.

Sigmund Freud, der sich in seinem Buch „Totem und Tabu“ um die zeitgenössischen Bezüge dieser beiden Begriffe bemüht, meint, unsere „heilige Scheu“ decke sich am ehesten mit dem Tabu. Das Gegenteil von Tabu heißt Noa; es ist das Gewöhnliche, Allgemein-Erlaubte. Northcote Thomas bezeichnet Tabu als den heiligen oder unreinen Charakter, der einer Person oder einem Ding anhaftet. Zugleich sei Tabu die Beschränkung, die sich aus diesem Charakter ergäbe. Ferner die Heiligkeit des Tabuträgers und das Gegenteil: die Unreinheit als Folge des verletzten Tabu-Verbotes.
Im Glauben der Naturvölker ist Tabu das Ergebnis einer geheimnisvollen Kraft, eben jenes Mana, das auch ein Ding auszeichnen kann. Wer die Tabukraft verliert wie die Totemtiere der Indianer Nordamerikas, büßt damit den Schutz ein, den es gewährt, da Tabu der Rache fähig ist. Wer ein Tabu-Verbot übertritt, wird selber tabu, d.h. von allen gemieden. Selbst Tote können tabu werden.*
* So wird bei den Maori aus Neuseeland jeder, der eine Leiche berührt, aufs äußerste unrein und ebenfalls die Grabstätte; denn für sie, wie für viele der Naturvölker, stirbt der Mensch, sofern nicht durch Gewalt, nur durch einen bösartigen Dämon, nie auf eine „natürliche“ Weise. Dieser Dämon aber ist es, der den Toten tabu macht.
