How I HATE the "new" GUI pattern (that must come from Gnome, I presume) that a dialog window from an app can not be moved around without moving the parent window with it.

That's the whole point of a dialog window… Otherwise, you should have replace the window by the dialog content.

But if I want to move the dialog window, it's because I want to see what's underneath, so don't attach the move of the parent to the dialog, it defeats the purpose and makes me want to throw my computer away.

Okta, for an authentication system, has so many rough edges and bad user experiences.

In the portal, and click the Sign Out button? Yeah, doesn't do anything.

Already logged in, but touching something that requires 2FA? Tell the user that, and give them options on what 2FA to trigger.

My org doesn't allow Windows Hello, so if I login with that, having Okta Verify pop up, with a big "Windows Hello confirmation <disabled>" doesn't help me, I can't use that to 2FA.

I eventually managed to log in. Apparently the account lockout was temporary, the dialog just didn't bother to say so and went straight to the "shit's fucked, get help" error message.

My new Windows password hasn't migrated to my Microsoft account (🤔) so now I'm just locked out of Teams. I'm in no rush to fix that.

The company's payroll is due today thanks to the bank holiday this week, and that's my responsibility with a professional certification on the line, so I do not have the option to wait for support from IT. Even for incredibly advanced tasks like "turning on my computer".

Fortunately (?) I also have an app for the company's password manager on my phone, and very nearly everything I do is SaaS, so I am now doing the company's payroll on my personal laptop. Which is now accessing every employee's personal information and has none of the security vetted and certified by the company, just whatever free privacy tools I happen to have.

You know, "security".

I am returned to the Windows login screen, and enter my new password, from the new scrap of paper attached to my monitor. You know, "security".

*Your account has been locked due to too many unsuccessful login attempts. Please contact your IT department.*

My IT department is one guy, and he's also off this week.

I create a third new password, which is also not complex enough. Then I wildly guess that some part of the process doesn't like one of the symbols I used, so my fourth password is only letters and numbers.

I know that it's 27 characters because I counted them, from the piece of paper I've written it on and stuck to my monitor.

The password manager will not update the Windows password on its own. I have to remember to go in and update it myself later, or next time I reboot I will be locked out. So every password I've ever used is written on a scrap piece of paper and carried around with my laptop, just in case.

I create another new password. This time I force-close the app, and then the notification finally arrives and I confirm with my fingerprint.

*Password doesn't meet our arbitrary and stupid complexity requirements, please try again."

This is doubly annoying because it could have told me that before going through the two-factor confirmation rigamarole, and also because nothing indicates what the requirements are, just that the 27-character password with caps and numbers and symbols that I entered wasn't complex enough.

I create a new password. *Please confirm on your mobile device.*

I wait a while but the linked password manager app that my company makes me keep on my phone does not produce a notification.

Eventually the dialog times out.

Monday after my winter holiday break, I'm looking forward to a productive week catching up for year-end and finalizing finance tools for 2026 while most of my coworkers are still off for the week.

I open my work laptop. *Your Windows password has expired.*

This is always a sign of a bad day starting. 🧵

@forteller GTranslator gets worse every time I upgrade Debian. The one in Debian 13 doesn't let me change the size of the input boxes any more, so I can't see more than a few lines of what I am translating.

I've switched back to using a text editor...

I love how Fediverse apps like #Peertube and Mastodon are connected and you can like videos from Mastodon. However, the user experience sucks. If I'm on a Peertube page I need to have an account on that server to be able to like videos.

To avoid that, I need to paste the Peertube URL into Mastodon's search to see the video's post and I can like it from there. #BadUX

Peertube should redirect me to that page after I enter my instance URL, just like Mastodon does for logins between instances.

Degoogling progress: over the last two days I’ve deleted over twenty thousand unneeded messages in my Gmail account and downloaded the remaining ones onto my machine. I’ve opened a new mail account with a European provider that offers ad-free, no-tracking, privacy-respecting email with multiple accounts.

I did run into a wall last night when I was trying to update the DNS records on my domain to point to the new provider. My internet provider has this great easy-to use interface that lets you see and modify domain records. Except, when I’d query the name server, the changes I made never happened. I put in a support ticket and went to bed.

This morning I woke up to a reply. The support people kindly explained that the interface I was using (found under a big button called “DNS Settings”) doesn’t actually work, and I have to go to a completely different interface called “Client Area” and do it there. Silly me!

I think it's crazy that emoji reactions on GitHub don't show up as notifications.

What's the point of implementing a medium for interacting with other people, if there's a very good chance you won't know that someone else interacted with you using that medium?

Someone 👍🏼 my comment on a PR I tagged them in. Had I not caught that by sheer luck, I would have no idea they had actually taken a look at it.

I mean, reactions are a great feature, it probably saved us from a massive amount of spammy "+1" comments, but the GH implementation just feels half-baked, like most things done under the Microsoft organization.

(and yeah, it should also come with a way to turn off those notifications. I can see it getting way too noisy 😅)

Trying to apply for this job an it asks "What is your notice period?" Okay, that's fine.

Wait, it insists on "A decimal number larger than 0.0"? But what are the *units*? If I need 2 months, do I put that in as "12", meaning 12 weeks? 😕

Changeable interfaces suck. I find myself clicking or tapping on the wrong thing constantly, because it changes under me. It's worse on touch screens, but still bad with a mouse. Worst on Android (in my experience), but present in every common OS.

messaging apps? i go to click on a conversation in the list, a new message appears, and the conversation i was going to click on has moved down by the time my click or finger tap registers.

search suggestions? same problem. the recent history populates first, but by the time i reach up and click, the items have moved to accomodate new suggestions.

I don't know what a good solution is, but... beyond actually inconsistent behavior, this is the most annoying interface design choice.

... what is means is that I have configured three triggers for alerts. The actual information about what is missing is all the way down at the bottom of the page, after scrolling all the way down, even below their "ad" panel (which is telling me about "welcome tips" although I've been suffering through this crapware since he was in kindergarten (now in high school).

So, the important information is at the bottom, and the settings are highlighted at the top.
