Sure, there ave millions of gallons of water in the atoll's lagoon, but it's only useful if you're a fish. #Lagoon water is as #salty as seawater, and on some #atolls it's choked with thick, grungy silt. Yuck!

Suspended material is carried seawards by tides through reef breaks, coalescing into a halo of sediment adjacent to the reef edge. As with hurricane transport, the sediment is steered to the right as it leaves the bank. The distance across this image is ca 25 km. The largest island is Grand Cay.

A few more photographs my students took by programming a camera on the #spacestation. Not bad for 250 miles up & 17,150 miles per hour. My students examined future space station ground tracks & then sent the codes to set the timer on the space station camera to snap photos of some of the landforms we are learning about in class. They captured great pics of #atolls #volcanoes #foresfires burning in Central Africa, #phytoplankton blooms along the Italian Coastline just to name a few #nasa #stem
