Did people already decided which network would be a good Discord alternative?
Will it be Matrix, XMPP or something else?
Whatever it will be, I hope it won't be another proprietary, business owned, closed network.

this crappy #ageverfication thing is not thought for decentralized networks.
#mastodon is open source, and I think the organisation developing it, deserve some credit.
I think they just want to develop an optional plugin, for instances that both have millions of users (in Europe current laws limiting social network, but not regarding to age yet, are applied just to social network of that dimension) and servers/admin within those countries with bad laws.
If I have a server with open subscriptions in a country that does not force me to do age verification, there's no way on earthI'm gonna even check ip or something else.

The biggest thing we want from tech giants is control over our communication, not age/identity verification.
More and more I think back to the 2023 Reddit API controversy, that this is what we should demand of all of our social media platforms. Third party clients should be normal. People should be able to opt out or in of algorithmic content. Content warnings should be provided so people can opt out or in of content they may not want to see.
This won't solve all internet and social media harm, but giving people the tools to control their own experience online is the first step.

Wondering how server owners will cope with age verification requirements here in the UK. The algorithm requirements don't apply as Mastodon doesn't have an algorithm anyway.
