The enshittification continues. I remember @evan shared some thoughts about using ActivityPub to develop a federated #dating app. In some ways, it's the ultimate test for UX, onboarding, etc, in federated networks. Some challenges;

* it requires helping people meet within a geographical range

* it requires a critical mass of attractive people using it to attract others (the bootstrap problem dialed up to maximum)

* Trust & Safety are *essential*

@dasgrueneblatt @AntennaPod I really wish #antennapod would go one step farther and integrate #activitypub it would be the killer feature to interact with podcasts and comment directly... Also being the first would be awesome ;)

Schnauze voll von der enshittification der Plattformen?

Das Internet war zu Zeiten von ICQ und Foren irgendwie ein besserer Ort?

Einen Teil davon können wir tatsächlich zurückdrehen – aber es wird natürlich auch besser als damals!

Was ist also das Fediverse bzw. Fediversum?

Stell dir vor in allen Foren der 2000er mit nur einem einzigen Account kommentieren zu können. So wie man ja auch immer noch zwischen Google und Microsoft Emails hin- und herschicken kann, ohne dass sind an den Wänden ihrer Datensilos abprallen.

Und jetzt stell dir vor, solche Interoperabilität auf „Social“ Media zu haben: auf Facebook Tweets im feed zu sehen und dort TikToks zu kommentieren. Interessiert? Dranbleiben – denn Freiheit hat ihren Preis. Der „Haken“?

Schritt 1: Entscheide, wo du anfängst…

Alles kann kreuz und quer gesehen, gefolgt und kommentiert werden, weil unter dem Fedi ein Protokoll liegt, keine Plattform.

Vielem kann auch ohne Account gefolgt werden – weil jeder Mastodon-Account einen RSS-Feed eingebaut hat. Aber sagen wir mal du willst Teil des Fedeverse werden…

Überleg dir, was du selbst posten möchtest:

• Kurze Texte, sporadisch Bilder, Hashtags zum ordnen? => Mastodon
• Fotoalben und Gruppen sind gewünscht? => Friendica
• Viele Bilder, wenig Text? => Pixelfed
• Kurzvideos? => Loops
• …und so weiter.

Es gibt aber noch etwas zu beachten: Loops ist 2026 immer noch taufrisch, während Mastodon („Microblogging“) so alt ist, dass man die Wahl zwischen Varianten hat*. Und offene Friendica-Server im Überfluss habe ich auch noch nicht gesehen. Also um überhaupt mal loszulegen und ein Gefühl dafür zu bekommen, was im Fediverse läuft, probier einfach Mastodon oder Pixelfed aus. Mit Mastodon bin ich vertraut, also beschreibe ich das – aber mit Pixelfed sollte es ziemlich ähnlich laufen.

Schritt 2: …und bei wem du anfängst!

Weil das Fediverse dezentral aufgebaut ist, muss der Server auch ausgesucht werden – so wie man sich einen Email-Provider aussucht. Unter https://joinmastodon.org/de/servers sind eine Menge server aufgelistet. Also muss WIEDER entschieden werden…

• Ist ein besonderes Thema gesetzt, #ThrashMetal z.B.? Dann könnte https://metalhead.club was für dich sein.
• Oder was mit Ortsbezug? Dann guck dir die Regionalen Instanzen an. Ihre „lokalen Feeds“ kann man im Browser ansehen. Und keine Sorge: die Thrasher auf metalhead.club sehen auch so alles, was du mit dem Hastag #ThrashMetal postest – falls sie dem folgen…
• Hast du vielleicht über eine Mitgliedschaft eine Instanz am Start? CCC, Digitalcourage und die Die Grünen haben schon eigene Server.
• Nutze Synnergieeffekte: tchncs.de oder systemli.org hosten noch andere Dienste, was auch ein Aspekt sein könnte.

Egal, wie du dich entscheidest: diese Server schütten dich nicht mit Werbung zu oder manipulieren dein Verhalten – dafür brauchen sie an irgendeiner Stelle deine Hilfe (Spendengelder!) Probier eine gut finanzierte Instanz aus, wenn es ein Problem ist, ein paar Mücken zusammenzukratzen.

Achte auch auf die Moderation: die /about seite des Servers, den du ins Auge gefasst hast, enthält auch die Verhaltensregeln. Hier moderieren Menschen – mit denen muss man sich arrangieren. Aber es gibt keinen KI-Zensor, der dich „zucked“ sobald du die „Sicherheitsbedrohung“ distrowatch.com verlinken willst.

Den Server kannst du später wechseln und den Account mitnehmen, falls etwas doch nicht passt. (Habe ich selbst allerdings noch nicht ausprobiert.)

Schritt 3: Registrier deinen Account

Stell die Anfrage bzw. registrier einfach deinen Account über Browser und Email, lade Profilbild und Banner hoch dann gib die Beschreibung ein (das können die Hashtags deiner Lieblingsthemen sein). Lass das Profilbild nicht zu lange leer – sonst siehst du wie ein Bot oder Troll aus. 😉

Wenn du wert auf die Netiquette legst, dann schreib einen kurzen Vorstellungspost mit den #NeuHier Hashtag.

Vielleicht sind Apps für dich bequemer. Zum lesen und schreiben bevorzuge ich die jedenfalls.

Schritt 4: WELCHE App!? (optional)

Wahrscheinlich hast du es geahnt: offene Protokolle, Interoperabilität, … tonnenweise Apps. 🤷‍♂️

Angefangen habe ich mit Tusky auf Android dann bin ich zu Fedilab gewechselt, um mehr Features zu haben. Wer weniger Features (und dafür ein übersichtlicheres Interface) bevorzugt, wird auch das finden. Es können problemlos mehrere der Apps parallel ausprobiert werden. Jede führt selbst durch die Verbindung mit dem Konto.

Schritt 5: Warum ist mein Feed leer? 🧐

Nun, das ist ein Feature: kein Algorithmus. (Sind die „zeigt mir einfach was meine Freunde teilen, wenn sie es teilen“-Sharepics noch präsent? Jetzt hast du die volle Kontrolle!)

Friendica plant einen Werkzeugkasten, um sich soetwas selbst zu bauen, aber Mastodon hat nur Timelines. „Global“ wird ziemlich nutzlos sein (zu viele Tröts in zu kurzer Zeit), „lokal“ kann auf kleineren Instanzen interessant sein. Aber um einen eigenen Feed zu bekommen, muss man irgendetwas aktiv folgen.

Ratsam ist es, besonders wenn man „Maga Platforms“ gewohnt ist, sofort auch Hashtags zu nutzen:

• Folge deinem Heimatort.
• Folge deinen Hobbies.
• Folge dem, was dir wichtig ist.
• …finde heraus, was du sofort stummschalten musst (in meinem Fall hat der Heimatort einen Fußballverein, der mich nicht im geringsten interessiert)

Wenn du Menschen oder anderen Accounts folgst, möchtest du vielleicht wegfiltern, was sie teilen (Boost) – und das kannst du für jeden der Accounts einzeln festlegen. Wenn nicht in deiner App, dann eben im Browser. Danach siehst du nur noch deren eigenen Kram.

Die „Handles“ deiner Kontakte gibt es in zwei Versionen – nicht davon verwirren lassen: „Inspirational Skeletor💀“ ist „@skeletor @mas.to“ innerhalb des Fediverse, aber der Web-Browser braucht https://mas.to/@skeletor, um den Account zu finden.

Es gibt viele nützliche Bots da draußen – vom Wetterbericht und der Prognose für regenerative Energien über Notfallmeldungen zu trendenden Beiträgen. Der https://tomkahe.com/@trending_bot ist vielleicht auch ein gutes Werkzeug für den Einstieg.

@nicholas @evan @stefan that's simple, but I don't agree. I think an open conversation protocol in this age (just describing #ActivityPub that way) should give conversants a means to set intention to grow the conversation, tools to do so (include my followers), and a way to reverse that intention (this tangent is getting specific…) and tools to do so such as limiting to the intersection of groups.
I am essentially describing boolean operations with groups.

FEP drafting: Am I using “side effects” here the same way as other ActivityPub developers? I've seen the term used a bunch in casual conversation, but my personal understanding of it is kinda fuzzy.

JS Intl is probably the most underestimated thing in the web :)

Try to ask devs. where in the browser you find the name in all the languages of all ISO stuff like countries, regions, languages currency.
Try to ask where all the timezones of the world are or how you give people internationalized lists, number expressions or relative time …

This is all https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/JavaScript/Reference/Global_Objects/Intl and in #ActivityPub we just need to federate e.g. id: "DE" for Germany.

@hongminhee I'm reading this thread as a relative noob, but what I see again and again: almost no one "properly" implents #ActivityPub largely because #JSONLD is hard but also because the spec itself is unclear. Most people who get stuff done have to go off-spec to actually ship.

This seems a fundamental weakness of the #fediverse - and that disregarding the limitations coming from base architecture. Seems to pose a mid/long-term existential threat.

What can we do to help improve things?

Also man sollte den "neuen" #Fediverse Diensten #Pixelfed und #Loops etwas mehr Aufmerksamkeit schenken. Ansonsten wäre vielleicht dem Team hinter #ActivityPub mit regelmäßigen Zuwendungen geholfen.

UND, ich finde man sollte kleinen Serverbetreibern mehr finanzielle Unterstützung für ihre #Instanzen zukommen lassen.

Große Instanzen sind gut und schön, aber widersprechen eigentlich dem Grundgedanken des Fediverse, und sind in meinen Augen auch ein Risiko.

Fun! Wired up my GoToSocial bio to my Eleventy site at build time. Update my ActivityPub bio → site rebuilds → geff.re stays in sync automatically.

• GoToSocial instance (id.geff.re) holds my canonical bio
• Eleventy global data file (_data/bio.js) fetches bio from API.
• Github Secret injected into the build env / ‘dotenv` for local dev

Static sites don't have to be static data. 😬
