After some investigation, I realized that any school-level geometry question brings back almost exclusively AI-generated answers, and they're ALL.
WRONG. The usual tells are there - long, rambling section structure, repeating the same thing in different ways to hit a requested article length, etc.
And they've hallucinated the math they're supposed to be explaining.
Where do we go from here?
For unimportant reasons, we needed to figure out the centroid of a trapezoid, and Googled for the formula. Bunch of pages come back, they all say that the vertical coordinate of the centroid is h/2, half the height of the trapezoid.
Only one problem.
It's not. It *can't* be; that would imply that the trapezoid was vertically symmetrical, which, you know, kind of the whole point of trapezoids that they're not necessarily symmetrical.

In skiing, 'slop' can refer to a kind of snow pack where lots of rain has fallen on new snow. It looks beautiful and like very good skiing conditions, but is in fact very dangerous and unskiable. Skis sink in and the snow tracks making it easy to tear ligaments or break a leg. 'Slop' can also avalanche very easily.

The #AI_Slop is growing exponentially which in turn increases the slop bucket depth and size which in turn has already degraded the quality and validity of search engine results. Some estimates have put the accuracy and degradation at 20-35% *worse*. So having the exponential growth of #AI_Slop is in turn DEcreasing the accuracy and value of *search* exponentially as well. Doing all of that on *bigger and faster* machines and #LLMs will only hasten the processes in play and dramatically increase the probability of truly catastrophic outcomes and consequences.
And that is the case already in play, without bringing in all the issues raised in Bender and Hanna's recent book (mandatory reading)

My first encounter with so-called "artificial intelligence" was in 1964-5 as an undergrad psychology student in an (snail mail) exchange with one of the pioneer researchers at Stanford. I've been involved in parts of it and tracked it ever since. It is critical to understand that it has taken OVER 60 YEARS to get to the mediocre state we are now in. It didn't happen "yesterday" or even in "the last 2 years" as some snake oil #AI_Salesmen would have everyone believe.

I have not got round to blogging for a few months, so of course I did not have my #NewYearResolutions written up and published (but hey #Nowruz is still a few weeks away!) - but one #NewYearResolution that will definitely be on that list is - I will definitely reprioritize my community involvement to favour those where I can discuss things without being ambushed by hearing about #AI_slop over and over again
For #DayJob, realistically it's hard to avoid AI mandates, but for community contributions... hmm...

Diese Vorschläge hat er mir geschickt ohne sie erstmal zu lesen.

It's really frustrating, seeing how many problems #AI_slop causes #OpenSource projects at the moment. Why are Tech Bros simply allowed to make the case of "yeah we might have stolen anything we could get our hands on but you see we need it so that everybody can use it." while the users have to be like "okay so I used an LLM to generate this code but I am absolutely not sure if it's from a legal source or not I just know that I am fucked if I use it in my project."
Another requirements document on my desk. 70% obviously written by an AI. Many items make no sense in the context of the project 🤔
When asking the potential client to clarify what they mean, they don't know either and can't explain.
Please! If you don't have the budget for someone to analyze and properly document your requirements, your project will most likely fail anyway.

I'm marking some student assignments at the moment and one yesterday stood out, but not for the right reasons.
The language was professional sounding and articulate, polished even, but the flow of meaning meandered all over, repeated itself and lacked structure.
Overall, the assignment did not impress (whilst superficially using impressive sounding, professional language).
Then at the end of the references a statement that ChatGPT had been used to tidy up language, improve phrasing etc. "all in line with the institutions AI policies".
If the student had taken the time to read and understand the brief, do the work and then create a clear narrative, they would have done so much better.
AI may be seductive, but it is not always good! #AI #ai_slop
