Somehow I missed the fact that Booker-longlisted "Endling" by Maria Reva is inspired by my snail antics. "So begins a journey of a lifetime across a country on the brink of war: three angry women, a truckful of kidnapped bachelors, and Lefty, a last-of-his-kind snail with one final shot at perpetuating his species." theguardian.com/books/2025/jun

I work on colourful Cuban snails (Polymita) and European snails (Cepaea). The last person to do that - at least according to Web of Science - was Alex Comfort. Now where do I know that name from?? 🤔🐌🤔👫 #snails #cepaea #polymita

THE PIGMENTATION OF MOLLUSCAN SHELLS
COMFORT, A
1951
BIOLOGICAL REVIEWS 26(3), pp.285-301
Molluscan shell pigments fall into 2 groups[long dash]acid-soluble pigments characteristic of lower marine forms, and protein-bound pigments in the higher marine forms and in all land and freshwater genera. Acid-soluble pigments occur in the Archaeogastropoda, in a few higher gastropods, in tectibranch opisthobranchs, and in some bivalves, notably the pearly oysters. They include uroporphyrin, a number of associated pigments which appear to be related to the mesobiliviolin series, and bilitrienes, as well as atypical pigment such as haliotiviolin, which appear to be pyrrolic. Protein-bound pigments include melanins and probably quinones incorporated in conchiolin by a process of tanning. The literature, distr. and chemistry of these substances are reviewed. Purple pigmentation of the shell occurs in marine spp. known to produce dibromoindigotin, and this pigmentation is related to diet (Moore 1936). In land forms, elaborate pigmentation is confined to the higher forms, reaching its max. in the arboreal genera. The pigmentation of Polymita picta and Cepaea nemoralis is discussed. Methods of study by direct shell spectroscopy and acid digestion are outlined, and the probable relationships of the protein-bound shell pigments to the hair and feather melanins of vertebrates are discussed.

@AnaVinuela @steveroyle I think he will probably come to regret his words, like Mandelson and others before him. Defending the indefensible. 100% embarrassing, agree.
