I kind of want to write a blog post about how #translation and #localisation of pop culture in the West was completely transformed by the internet and amateur translators.

Hard to remember now the days when Japanese stories would get redrawn in western style so that they wouldn't seem too foreign, or when Fred Flintstone became Pedro Picapiedra in Mexico.

Can we all take a moment to talk about Jarl Balgruuf's sheer incompetence?

There are three bandit camps within a few minutes' walk of the city: one in a big old nordic ruin, one in a big obvious stockade, and one in an OPEN CAVE UNDER THE JARL'S VERY CASTLE. The have a combined population that is very possibly larger than the city of Whiterun itself.

Info that's useful for user and #mastoadmin alike:

If you're reporting a user on another instance, and you choose to forward your report to the admin of that instance, the report is anonymized: on the remote instance, it appears to come from the admin of the instance you're on.

This is for your protection, but it also makes including a report reason and offending toots important, because the remote admin doesn't know who you are and has no way to check with you about what's going on.

For the record: After reorg in 2018 Facebook has fewer Women in charge of key parts of the business than dudes called "Chris".

The thing which bugs me with modern centralised social media is that moderation is woefully under staffed.

People are impressed "wow facebook has 20k moderators that's huge!" But they have over 2 Billion users!

That's one moderator for every 100k users.

It's 8 o'clock, and I'm feeling comfortingly bisexual.

F-Droid (@fdroidorg) is a bit like a neighbourhood fair-trade mini-market run by eccentric hippies.

They may not sell your favourite brand of TV dinners, but that's kinda the point.

The analogy mostly fails because in the real world supermarkets tend to be cheaper. Not so in this case!

A lot of people make a point of shopping locally when feasible, and treat supermarkets as a "backup" for when that fails. F-Droid lets us do the same thing with phone apps.
