@vamp898 FWIW, we do get reports from people who found it easy to convince their friends of Delta Chat, while they struggled with other decentralized messengers. Some advantages are very fast and easy onboarding, mini-apps inside chats, and consistent UX across platforms. But YMMV

WRT slowness: If you use a chatmail relay (see delta.chat/en/legacy-move#opti for how to switch if you've been using a classical email account in Delta so far), then messages usually arrive within under a second.

@vamp898 It turned out to be pretty hard to support two very different use cases at a time (an email client and a messenger), forcing us into many bad compromises. After long discussions, we decided to focus on being a messenger, while you can still use it to write classical email.

We would love if someone created a fork of Delta Chat that focuses on being an email client showing your emails in a chat view!

some insights from #deltachat forum gardening 🌸

- we’re getting about 7 new feature proposals per week, with over 1k ideas shared so far

- we aim to keep things simple and focused, so we often have to say "no!", but:

- we do listen: over the years, we’ve fulfilled about ONE THIRD of your wishes 🧞‍♂️

your pushes are appreciated ❤️

@tchambers you're not doing anything wrong ❤️ "@user", so called "mentions", are not implemented yet, but discussed at support.delta.chat/t/direct-me

@alexia there are several teams and project areas and wider contributor circles. So it's hard to give a unified answer as we haven't discussed it widely yet. In any case anyone submitting to key repos needs to sign off personally on it, and it's human reviewed and merged. AI slop issues and PRs and "security findings" are usually closed immediately. Generally there is a lot of skepticism and critique on using LLMs, training data etc but also curious experimenting in various corners.

@Hiro @feld this better reported and discussed in the forum. the finding of tui versus desktop is a useful measurement to report!

2026-02-19

@Hiro @feld problem is more likely especially on desktop that rerendering happens too often during syncing new messages. Well eventually optimize that ;)

2026-02-19

@Hiro It can be helpful if you say what kind of setup you have on your laptop. Does it have Delta Chat on SSD or HDD? CPU getting hot is unexpected, normally syncing old messages is I/O limited even on SSD.

2026-02-19

@Hiro Annoying sync times/processing after longer offline times is a known problem for heavy users of delta, and you are not alone having it. So far it hasn't been prioritized because focus is still on removing obstacles and making it easier for people who freshly join.

@mason @nathanael Erlang is cool, no question, but as to server software, postfix and dovecot are reliable as well. Apart from dovecot focusing mostly on enterprise and corporate deployments (like matrix) both are still solid software, and serve well as basis for #chatmail relay deployments. There are also interesting alternative transport relay stacks in popular use which is how it should be.

@pancake wasn't liquid glass only introduced last year from apple?

2026-02-18

@pancake delta chat doesn't feel native on Android and iOS for you? Or do you mean desktop platforms?

@radasbona Using a classic email as relay will continue to work, only hybrid usage (using the same address with e.g. Thunderbird) is not supported: delta.chat/en/help#can-i-use-a

We are removing the options which were useful for hybrid usage in the past:
- "show all emails", github.com/chatmail/core/issue
- "move to deltachat folder", and "only fetch from deltachat folder", github.com/chatmail/core/issue

I hear a lot about Matrix being a truly decentralized protocol. But if you register with an instance and it goes down, all users under that instance go down with it. It happened a couple of months ago @ matrix.com and everybody knows it.

Differently, Delta Chat allows users to register same account on different relays so if the main goes down, users can just switch relay and keep chatting.

That makes Delta Chat one step ahead. Prove me wrong.

@daniel We are currently in the process of removing three "legacy options" and it definitely costs us at least 100 times more effort that it took to introduce them.

2026-02-13

@strypey Chatmail relays (chatmail.at/doc/relay/) use existing email software, Postfix and Dovecot, we did not have to write our own server. It also includes TURN and iroh relay for realtime features such as calls and webxdc realtime channels (webxdc.org/docs/spec/joinRealt), but nothing custom is needed for fast messaging.

@d1 @pixelschubsi @autistics
We are not actively looking for advertisements and promotion of Delta Chat. Sometimes it happens accidentally and usually brings users with vastly different requirements than existing users. Users recommending Delta Chat to their friends works much better as they bring similar users and we can adapt slowly instead of getting feature requests from entirely new users.

@gertvk don't worry too much about uptime or server specs. A) the smallest vps will do b) near future chat profiles will use multiple relays so if one is temporarily not online, it's not too bad.
