greetings AI boosters. Perhaps before you predict the elimination of (all) "white collar jobs" you could do one thing. Give me an example of these supposed jobs that involve only routine work and require no actual creative human intelligence. I can't think of a single one. #AI #business

"Animated Bokeh" has been on my whiteboard for a long time, and this is the result.

I thought it would just be for cheesy novelty effects, but it also does lightfield manipulation that was cooler than I expected.

“What do you have to hide?“

Everything.

Full stop. Period.

Every. Thing.

What I had for breakfast is my choice to put out in the world.

Who I love, who my friends are, what we talk about, the books I read, the websites I visit, my favourite animal, my choice of shoelaces.

It. Does. Not. Matter. How. “Big”. Or “Small”.

Every. Thing.

It’s all up to me to decide who I want to share anything with.

Hello UK #GreenParty members on here: I would really like the Green Party to set up on #Mastodon. Our local party (closed down after last election by somewhat erratic unilateral decision) has just reestablished and it is all X, FB and Insta. I have suggested Mastodon but noone knows it. I will work on it locally but is there any way to take it to the top somehow? Can we get together on here to write an email? Any suggestions welcome. #UKpolitics

I know it's a long shot but if someone who sees this found their way to Mastodon through one of the leaflets we distributed at , I want to hear from you--what did you think of the leaflet? I need to generalize those for other events.

"social cohesion" is the "climate wars are over" of the late 2020s. Labor doesn't want peace, or cohesion or actual societal improvement. It wants everyone to stop yelling at them. It worked for the climate movement but it won't work for the anti-genocide movement.

Facing yet another authentication barrier to do something in an online system, are we already almost in a two-tier system where humans have less access than certain "trusted" AI agents?
Because as AI agents do more things, they'll have some privileged rapid access that humans no longer have.
This is just another way of framing the AI apocalypse where AI agents take over, because they can do anything they want at near-infinite scale, and we operate at human scale.

A new archaeological exhibition at 's James-Simon-Gallery just opened, showing our finds from and other sites never before seen outside Urfa officially - and it's spectacularly well worth the visit:

And for me, well for me it's also a great opportunity for a reunion, finally, with my old pal ! 🙌

More business-friendly (de)regulation from the Financial Conduct Authority:

after lobbying the Buy-Now-Pay-Later sector will not have to reveal to prospective borrowers:

* their withdrawal & cancellation rights;

* their right to complain to the financial ombudsman; nor,

* the lender’s ability to take money from their account.

all three which BNPL lenders argued were irrelevant details not required by borrowers... yeah, right.

More regulatory capture!

"But the minor party also plans to dismantle the government response to climate change, which it does not believe is man-made, wind back access to abortion care and abolish the Therapeutic Goods Administration."

The threat is real.

I have officially deleted my Amazon account and cut ties with their ecosystem entirely. For a long time, the convenience of Prime felt like a necessary evil, especially since they have a warehouse in my city and can do same day shipping. But I can no longer reconcile the big tech giant's behavior with the values I promote at Terminal Tilt. As a privacy advocate and FOSS supporter, continuing to feed the machine feels increasingly hypocritical.

Ethically, their treatment of labor is indefensible. Between the terrible warehouse conditions and the dark patterns designed to make canceling subscriptions nearly impossible, it is clear they view both employees and customers as numbers to be exploited, with contempt. Their anti-competitive practices have done irreparable harm to small businesses and independent creators who are forced to play in a rigged sandbox.

As an FSF and EFF member, I believe privacy is a fundamental right. Amazon's business model relies on massive data harvesting and a huge surveillance network that I simply do not want to be a part of. Deleting my account is my way of reclaiming my digital sovereignty and refusing to let my personal data be a product in their inventory.

The change also affects how I handle Terminal Tilt going forward. I am officially ending the use of Amazon affiliate links for the channel. While the links are a standard revenue stream for most creators, I refuse to track my audience into the Amazon ecosystem just for a small commission. I would rather the channel grow slower and more honestly than profit from a company that actively works against user freedom. Convenience is the enemy of sovereignty.

When I review products now, whether it is the security keys from @nitrokey , @yubico , and Token2 or open source hardware, I will provide links to direct manufacturers or ethical, privacy-respecting retailers instead. Convenience should never be the primary metric for our choices.

If you want to support my work on Linux, privacy, and the #NoAI movement, I encourage you to use my LiberaPay or Ko-Fi links. Supporting creators directly ensures that the content remains independent and free from the influence of the Epstein class and corporate overlords. You can find all my direct support links on my self-hosted Linkstack: links.terminaltilt.com

It feels good to be out. It is time to prioritize people and principles over same-day shipping.

This paper shows alignment between LLMs and brain data is outperformed by a null model. More evidence for the argument I've been making in talks lately that we shouldn't believe any computational paper that puts less effort into null than main model.

Although note that I only had time to flick through it so far and so I can't vouch for it.

package ask: rmarkdown/quarto to LaTeX roundtrip. For collaboration with colleagues that might not understand rmarkdown but are comfortable with latex. Render to latex, upload to overleaf and do edits there. They can see the plots and all the final layout. Then convert the result to rmarkdown to render the final version to include any changes to code or plots.

The job-ready graduate scheme has been amongst the worst educational policies in recent history, and that’s a competitive and crowded policy field. It’s cratered enrolments in creative, cultural, and artistic fields at a time when these are becoming the only meaningful fields of distinctly human activity. theguardian.com/australia-news
