Sometimes I just sit down and realise:

  • Tinkering with Linux eventually resulted in my dream job
  • Many FOSS tools I use are made by awesome individuals, most of them working on things on their free time
  • I trust my devices more now that I use these tools
  • Since I run tools like Nextcloud myself, I can trust that my data is not being misused
  • I have knowhow to help my friends and family to keep their data safe (sometimes I wish they would follow my advice but anyway lol)
  • Since I dont use corpo social media, none of the crap around it concerns me
  • I am just generally happier since I do not have worry about any of the techbro nonsense

Makes me feel oddly sated. Calm.

Is any of it perfect? No. But I take these always over the user-hostile corpo solutions.

So people who work on all of these free tools: Thank you. :)

For the record I'm happy to stick with ktown for now. I usually run just plain labwc or for kicks labwc/noctalia, which with recent updates labwc has now working workspaces. I'm thinking about contibuting to nocatalia because the only missing piece is a ~/.config/labwc/themerc-override file with noctalia's selection of colour schemes.

..and #noctalia made me laugh today here on this rainy day..

All good @jloc0 @r1w1s1 @dobbie003 @thesaigoneer

Certainly understandable.

@jloc0 I was at some point going to install your #kde6 but I realised it was gone when I did an update/upgrade and Falkon was using Qt5. :bunnesad:
So I took the plunge and installed #ktown It's working fine and falkon behaves now. Running as the wayland session. I'm not a huge fan of big DEs but I'll keep it around until/if it ever makes -current.

BTW, @r1w1s1 I ran the check depends script and about the same as amount as last time is slightly broken. All apps still functional though.

The new #mpd frontend is starting to take shape, however it is really still in the concept phase. Right now all the setup is done with #pyqt6 then it hands over to #quickshell via a Popen() call, where the pid is saved and everything dies (reasonably) gracefully on exit.

What needs to be done is the integration of the QML gui into the python scripts via QtQuick. That will really bring it out of concept and into development ๐Ÿค“

I've always said: the best way to get people to realise how flawed #ChatGPT is, is to get them to ask it something about a topic they are experts in.

I'm kindof not surprised. Never been a huge fan of xfce, it's like the DE you have when not having a DE ๐Ÿ˜ , which is probably a bit harsh because we all know how much work it is to try to bring a team together and make something credible.
That said, if they pull this off then it will be a master stroke. They are going the rust/smithay instead of C/wlroots.

@thesaigoneer @dobbie003 exactly about the money by planned obsolescence. I kept an old samsung Galaxy W (2012 or so) going for 3 years on updated CyanogenMod ROMS.

@thesaigoneer I made a pledge to myself that I'll post no new code to github. A lot of my stuff there that isn't forked will be sunset anyway; it's old and not worth the effort.

Picture of a pair of hands holding a stick of RAM memory with colorful RGB led lighting, in the process of installing it on a motherboard.

Caption reads: The reason RAM prices went up 4x is that a massive amount of not-yet-manufactured memory was bought with money that doesnโ€™t really exist to be put into GPUs that havenโ€™t been made yet, to be installed in data centers that havenโ€™t been built, powered by infrastructure that may never exist, to satisfy demand that isnโ€™t actually there, in order to generate profits that are mathematically impossible.
