'NZ Woolworths customer sent ‘cremated’ roast chicken through Milkrun'.

Cremated.
Well join the dots. It is a reality check if you eat them.

You pay for them to be born and killed in circumstances you probably don't look at, by machines or in the 'care' of unvetted people you haven't met to ensure they aren't psychopathically cruel.

Your part in the chain is probably so automated that you don't even stop to notice.
Industry keeps your thinking bottlenecked with constant adverts and imagery of lives as shrinkwrapped 'product' instead.

But they are lives you CAN value.
It is pain you CAN refuse to cause.
Only by luck did you land in your body, not theirs.
Break the chain.

If you get grocery deliveries from woolies: There's currently 50% off the free deliveries for a year deal, comes out to AUD$60. I always order our weekly deliveries on Tuesdays to get the $2 rate, so we'll save AUD$40 over the year. Worth it!

Just gotta remember to cancel before it renews without the discount.

‘Capsicum paradox’
Unless a customer did complex maths on the spot, they wouldn’t know if they were being “ripped off” by the “per each” price, the analysis found.

In the most striking example, which the analyst called the “capsicum paradox”, Woolworths charged 51% more for green capsicums when priced individually compared with when they were priced by weight.
Most shoppers wouldn’t realise they were paying nearly $15/kg for a vegetable they could get for $9.90/kg on the shelf, the analyst said.
The green capsicums cost $9.90/kg in store and $2.48 each online.

Supermarkets doing it for themselves.

Nothing changes.

Went to the Centre of Computing History in #cambridge a few months ago and found a #binatone that dad brought back from #Woolworths around about 1981. It was our first video game console and brother and I played on it for ages.

OK all you parrot owners and parrot lovers, is there some special relationship with watermelon?

Why do parrots have to be dragged to them??

Why would you connect a parrot to a watermelon?

Why connect, and then drag? Why not staple the parrot directly to the watermelon?

The new Woolworths test for being human - drag an image of a parrot to an image of a watermelon if there's a squiggly line joining them.

Woolworths, how about *don't* display "Hey! Click here to see similar products!" if you know that you don't have any similar products???

Maybe
IF product is out of stock AND there are similar items AND similar items are in stock
THEN
show the "View similar items" button
ELSE
don't. Just don't.

#Woolworths #UI

The Woolworths app.
Top panel shows Rum Balls, and small text says "UNAVAILABLE", then a very large button says "VIEW SIMILAR"
Clicking that button takes you to a screen that says "Sorry, we are unable to provide suggestions for this type of product."

I was one of the fifth floor fire wardens. I got out of the building about fifteen seconds before the bomb went off. Miraculously, all the injuries were minor.

An anecdote to see if this is part of a big pattern driven by capitalist greed.

I eat a lot of #Carman's Classic Fruit and Nut Toasted #Muesli. I'd been buying it from Coles and felt the fruit-and-nut content had diminished a little recently.

Then, a week or so back, I bought a bag from #Supabarn in Lyneham (née IGA) and was surprised how very fruity it was. I bought another bag from them today, and it was the same (quite possibly the same batch).

This got me wondering.

Given how #Coles and #Woolworths squeeze producers, are there some products for which the producers use the same packaging to produce a good version for general retail and a less good version to sell to the supermarkets so the can retain a margin? If I shop elsewhere, will I find that the fish in tins of tuna (which I only buy for someone else) aren't always now 50% water?

@earthmothering9

I had a look at the product reviews in the Woolies app, and there are a lot of people who feel the same way.

"Bunch" is a Woolies foodie community, who were all sent a free sample, and their feedback was pretty scathing too.

It's two decades since Tasmanian vegetable growers led one of Australia's biggest agricultural protests to Canberra. The tractor-powered Fair Dinkum Food Campaign pushed for an overhaul of food labeling and for consumers to buy locally grown produce. While labelling improved, farmers say 20 years on, local growers and manufacturers are battling for survival, forced to compete against the rising tide of cheap imports.

Recently, I've been trying to find ways to avoid the Colesworths supermarket duopoly as much as possible.

I'm pulling together a cheat sheet of alternatives. If you have any suggestions you can recommend, please leave them as a comment.

Some will be more expensive (IGA and Foodworks), but others (like grocery clearance stores and Aldi) less so. Hopefully it balances out.

It's also important to note there's likely to be far more alternatives if you're in Melbourne or Sydney than a remote or rural area.

The starting point is to stop thinking in terms of a one-stop shop.

Even if you're in a very Colesworth dependent town, even shifting some of your grocery shopping to a local bakery or green grocer is a win.

The starting point: Shopping local. If there's a local bakery, green grocer, deli, butcher, etc., then support them.

A good tip on this front is discount chemists often stock toiletries and household cleaning products at prices comparable to Colesworths.

If it's available: Grocery clearance stores (even if it's just once a week).

*NQR in Melbourne and Adelaide: https://nqr.com.au/
* Factory Food Sales Melbourne and Geelong: https://foodfactorysales.com.au/
* Savemore Melbourne: https://www.savemore.net.au/
* Discount Grocery Store Albury–Wodonga: https://discountgrocerywarehouse.com.au/
* Cheaper Buy Miles Melbourne:

Next: Is there a farmers market in your area?
* https://farmersmarkets.org.au/find-a-market/

If not, there's some services offering direct produce from farmers:
* https://farmerspick.com.au/
* Happy to hear more recommendations

The obvious one is Aldi, although it doesn't stock everything.

And then IGA or Foodworks. It is more expensive, but it's more of a backfill for things you can't get elsewhere.

Even if there's no local IGA in your area, many stores offer free delivery for orders over $100: https://www.igashop.com.au/delivery

For our babies, we're tending to bulk order from Pet Circle. It works out cheaper often, even with delivery fees: https://www.petcircle.com.au/

If you're vegan in Sydney, The Cruelty Free Shop (formerly in Glebe, now moving to the CBD) is great but pricey, and there's a few others around the country: https://australia.veganonthemap.com/vegan/shops

Any other suggestions or things I've missed?
