I was reading a story today about #theoldnet and how if you leave an “&” symbol at the end of an #email , it means you want the recipient to reply back. Does anyone remember this or still do this today? I don’t recall that being a thing or maybe it was and I didn’t notice. Gonna tag below with adjacent words in hopes of response.

He uses the #xtide #opensource #bios (https://www.xtideuniversalbios.org/) and a null modem cable to a windows computer. Unfortunately it seems the disk #emulator app is available only for Windows, but I imagine it could be implemented in a #serial #wifi #modem firmware (like #zimodem or #theoldnet 's). Imagine having a #samba share on your #NAS and telling the wifi modem to mount an image on that, then turn on the old pc and boot it from your NAS via WIFI... awesome!!!

I'm going to build a #wifi #serial #modem for my #amstrad PPC640. Something like #theoldnet 's wifi modem, but I'll use #zimodem on an #esp8266 , because it worked ok with my #commodore64 and now I have some experience with it...
The idea is having the esp emulate an #hayes modem on the #UART pins and convert it to rs232 using a #max3232 module.
I also will need to solder a 9 to 25 pin #rs232 adapter, because I absolutely don't remember where mine is (used last time a couple of home moves ago... 😅)

The #ProtoWeb project is just awesome. As great as #TheOldNet is, this project takes that concept and puts it into a proper, dedicated browser (you can even simulate a 56k modem's speeds) where you can effectively relive the early days of the web.
The shareware here even appears to still be downloadable!
Definitely look into it if you're feeling nostalgic for the old web.

One of my @mediaarchaeologylab #Marchintosh projects has been to rehabilitate this all-in-one Macintosh PowerPC 5260/100, a precursor of the more colorful iMac and eMac all-in-ones. This one has a dead backup battery and has some issues with its SCSI port in the back, but is now bootable and has a lot of great games and other stuff on it like the Newton Connection Kit, which I really want to test out with the Newton we have in the back room. I also anticipate having some fun using my new #TheOldNet wifi modem emulator with it. #mediaarchaeology #mac #macos8
