"The updated 'The State of the Thames' report by #ZSL highlights how decades of dedicated action have bettered the #Thames for people and nature – including beloved species such as harbour porpoises and wading birds. These improvements include lower concentrations of toxic metals, more ‘breathable’ water for the river’s underwater wildlife, and new riverside walkways and nature habitats along its banks that are enjoyed by #London’s residents and visitors.

"The report also shows how rapidly regulation can bring benefits; plastic cotton bud sticks, once one of the most commonly found litter items in the Thames, have all but disappeared from its shores following the UK’s sale-ban in 2022."

Here, translucent streaks of blue and gray in the sky suggest movement among the clouds, and small dashes of color throughout the foreground trees create a sense of rustling vegetation. Reflections on the river’s surface shimmer with light.

We went to the fascinating "Secrets of the Thames" exhibition at the London Museum Docklands today. My favourite exhibit was some examples of Doves Type recovered from the river and subsequently used to recreate the font. The photo is poor, but the story is much better. 1/3 #typeface #thames

A metal wire tree holds eleven typeface punches that had been recovered from the bed of the Thames near Hammersmith Bridge. Around thirty more punches are piled around the bottom of the tree on a wooden base. Each punch is made of light grey metal with a raised letter or punctuation mark at one end. A reproduction of part of the Thames shore can be seen in the background.

Will loved spending his evenings down by the #docks with her, the views were lovely, watching the planes land was cool, they could talk for hours about anything and nothing. So hard to find that nowadays.

She was a #ghost - died 20 years ago. But he didn't care.

Charing Cross Bridge - Fog on the Thames (1903) by Claude Monet (1840 - 1926). Between 1899 and 1901, Monet visited #London three times. He rented the same room on the sixth floor of the Savoy Hotel on the Victoria Embankment and painted the view from his window of south London and the Thames. The resultant works - more than a hundred paintings and twenty pastels - formed the largest series he had produced to that date.

Henley on Thames, Red Lion Hotel, England between ca. 1890 and ca. 1900. Views of the British Isles England Henley-on-Thames

loc.gov/pictures/item/20026969

The image depicts a picturesque riverside scene, likely in the late 19th or early 20th century. A man is seen rowing a small boat on calm waters with gentle ripples around him, suggesting tranquility and leisurely activity typical of this era. The background features an array of historical buildings including what appears to be townhouses and possibly commercial establishments along the riverbanks. Architectural styles suggest European influences, likely British due to the context provided.

Notable in the scene is a bridge with arched supports crossing over the waterway, connecting two parts of the town or village on either side. The presence of various boats implies that this area was used for transportation and possibly tourism during that time period.

A prominent feature includes a flag flying atop one building, suggesting it may be an important establishment such as a hotel or public building. Text at the bottom indicates "Henley-on-Thames" with reference to "Red Lion Hotel," providing geographical context and identifying this location specifically within England.

The overall mood of the image is nostalgic, capturing a moment from another era where river travel was common, and quaint European architecture lined waterways as leisurely pursuits were enjoyed by residents.

Henley Regatta, II., England between ca. 1890 and ca. 1900. Views of the British Isles England Henley-on-Thames

The image depicts a bustling regatta on what appears to be the River Thames, given its width and layout. Numerous small boats with people aboard are scattered across the water, engaged in rowing competitions or leisurely sailing. The attire of many individuals suggests an early 20th-century setting; women wear long dresses and hats while men sport shirts and caps typical of that era.

On either side of the riverbank, large crowds gather to watch the events unfold. Spectators on the banks are dressed in light-colored clothing suitable for outdoor activities during a sunny day. Flags attached to some boats flutter gently as they move through the water, adding movement and life to the scene. Inland from both bank sides, greenery is visible which indicates that this regatta takes place near parks or open public spaces.

In terms of context, such events were common on the Thames in Henley-on-Thames during the late Victorian era into the Edwardian period. The term 'Regatta' refers to a rowing competition and it's been held annually since 1851 at this location. It has grown significantly from its beginnings as a local event with just twelve boats participating, but now draws crowds of thousands and international teams.

The photograph is marked "Henley-on-Thames" along the bottom edge indicating its specific locale on the Thames river in England. The number 'II.' suggests it's p [...]

A riverside scene where a group of children and adults watch as enormous, shimmering soap bubbles are created using a giant net with two wands attached. The bubbles float and burst in the air, drawing the attention of onlookers. Some people smile and appear delighted, some take photos, some are trying to dive away from the sticky mess. Some of the children are dressed in red jackets, drawing the eye. The bubble artist is mostly hidden behind bubbles. In the background, a bridge with distinctive towers stretches across the river, and historic buildings line the opposite bank. The sky is overcast, adding a moody atmosphere to the scene, with trees framing the left side of the image.
