Ah yes, CES 2026: where a $14M robot can now bring you a soda—slowly, loudly, and after a firmware update. But sure, let’s call it 'physical AI' and not 'a Roomba with ambition.' 🤖🥤

🔍 Ah, the sweet irony of a tech optimist turning sour on the internet 🍋. With a career built on code and hope, Mr. Reitz finally discovers his epiphany: the very net he helped weave is now a tangled mess of doom. Bravo, Captain Obvious, on your groundbreaking realization that the internet is more twisted than a pretzel! 🥨🚀

Ah yes, just a *simple prompt* away from replacing recruiters. Because hiring is famously easy, emotionally neutral, and never involves humans lying to each other on Zoom. 🔥🤖

🌊✨ A massive thank you to @jerry and his fantastic blue-ocean.social server for introducing me to Bluesky! I've created a new account: @debby.blue-ocean.social 🚀💙

With a decentralized server, I'm excited to see how I can maintain my privacy while enjoying all the benefits Bluesky has to offer 🌐🔒. I'll be sure to keep you all updated on my journey and share my thoughts on this Twitter alternative!

The platform's emphasis on user autonomy is a breath of fresh air, and while it seems to have less open-source technology themes than Mastodon, the overall vibe is incredibly refreshing 🌈! I really appreciate the tech-nerdiness in the Fediverse, but working in tech, I think it's essential to keep in touch with people without programming knowledge to stay connected to the broader society 😅.

At first glance, Bluesky feels like the old Twitter but with a much more positive twist.

Here's to new beginnings and the future of decentralized social media! 🙌💬

Happy birthday to ARPANET, the forerunner of the modern internet! 53 years ago, the first message was sent over this pioneering network, paving the way for a world of interconnection and innovation.

As a tech enthusiast, I am constantly amazed by the ways the internet has transformed our lives, allowing us to communicate, learn and share ideas across boundaries and borders. From social media to e-commerce, from telemedicine to remote work, the internet has become an essential part of our daily routines, enabling us to connect with others and access a wealth of information at our fingertips.

A black commemorative plaque with gold frame, inscribed with gold letters. It reads:

"At 10:30 p.m., 29 October 1969, the first ARPANET message was sent from this UCLA site to the Stanford Research Institute. Based on packet switching and dynamic resource allocation, the sharing of information digitally from this first node of ARPANET launched the Internet revolution."

The fundamental premise of human beings is to exercise control and dominance over others. It would have started as a biological imperative for survival. Now there is a strong tendency to be autocratic in almost every walk of life through a nexus of power and surveillance. This leads us to being corrupted and addicted either to fear or money (~ profit) or both at various degrees. Technology has always been a driver to this unlimited human greed. Any technology that initially gets deployed as a public good eventually gets architected and channelised to promote these aspects directly or indirectly and thus further evolves in the direction of profit and control by influencing economic policies, practices and information management. The public good that the technology generates remains as collateral benefits in the long term. The urge to profit, in the short term, from every possible transaction drives us crazy. The ecological damages (pollution, micro plastics, desertification, deforestation etc.) and climate impact due to creation of technology driven infrastructures are obviously overlooked. This has led to significant asymmetric distribution of wealth (as per this source) as summarised below.

1. half of the world's net wealth belongs to the top 1%.
2. top 10% of adults hold 85%, while the bottom 90% hold the remaining 15% of the world's total wealth.
3. top 30% of adults hold 97% of the total wealth.

Science-fiction writer Ted Chiang, whose work inspired the movie "Arrival,"
spoke at the 2023 GeekWire Summit in Seattle.

"Technology can solve certain problems, but I think the biggest problems that we face are not problems that have technological solutions," Chiang said in response. "Climate change probably does not have a technological solution. Wealth inequality does not have a technological solution. Most of these are problems of political will.

"Tech Zionism" brought to you by Balaji is the latest creepy libertarian idea from those pushing the Network State as a modern version of the ideas of people like Ayn Rand.

@404mediaco please keep an eye on these creeps. The tie ins to tech companies and their leaders/financiers is troubling. Makes you wonder what you supporting when you use some products and services. Not to mention who has access to your data.

Finally, someone - in this case Matthew Iglesias, has taken on the #TechBro “technology optimists” who naively believe that we can ‘tech’, ‘build’, and ‘birth’ out way out of our current problem spaces. They’re wrong and it’s rubbish of course. Impulsive, immature naïveté by folks who SHOULD know better. This kind of insane, happy optimism in the face of overpopulation, climate change, a falling birthrate, war and polarization is just arrogant folly. They argue all technology is inherently good, uh-huh. Here’s Iglesia’s worthy takedown slowboring.com?utm_source=navb #technolgy #TechnologyOptimism #TechOptimism #Naivete #SiliconValley

Heart transplants are nothing short of a miracle of medicine. But at the same time, it requires someone to lose their life for doctors to save a life. We're literally trading lives. Also, there are just not enough hearts to go around, especially for kids with heart problems.

Wired 1.01 should have been next to the complete set of Mondo2000 but it's gone. What I did find was Wired 6.01 - The 5th Anniversary edition - "CHANGE IS GOOD" containing a message from the Second World, "Art & Corruption Bruce Sterling in St Petersburg on what's really going on in Russia".

Also Wired - Mind Grenades - Manifesto From The Future. A 96 special edition.

Today’s bit of #techoptimism: While 2022 saw many unfortunate layoffs in the #Tech sector, job growth in funded tech startups in #Africa was styring, and the number of new jobs created nearly doubled from 2021, and the sector bringing in more than USD 3bn in investments. Africa’s tech sector is bringing both jobs and innovations to the continent. disrupt-africa.com/2023/02/24/
