St. Luke’s Medical Center Launches Evelyn D. Ang/Dāna Charity Ward
In a groundbreaking initiative that seeks to redefine access to quality healthcare, St. Luke’s Medical Center, through the St. Luke’s Medical Center Foundation, Inc. (SLMCFI), has officially launched the Evelyn D. Ang/Dāna Charity Ward, a completely free 40-bed facility dedicated to underserved and indigent Filipino patients.
More than a new hospital unit, the Evelyn D. Ang/Dāna Charity Ward embodies the transformative power of generosity, turning compassion into life-changing care.
Rooted in the Sanskrit word Dāna (दान), which means “the practice of selfless giving,” the initiative reflects the belief that healing is not just a medical duty but also a shared human responsibility.
This project reflects a strong partnership between St. Luke’s Medical Center, the family of Mr. Philip Ang, and other generous donors. Through their shared commitment, the ward brings high-quality and accessible healthcare to indigent patients at no cost.
Admissions began last November 10, marking the start of a new chapter in inclusive, compassionate healthcare.
The Ward is strategically integrated within St. Luke’s Quezon City’s main building, ensuring that charity patients receive the same standard of world-class care, medical expertise, and modern facilities as private patients.

A Vision of Healing and Equity
The Evelyn D. Ang/Dāna Charity Ward exemplifies St. Luke’s commitment to bridging healthcare disparities in the Philippines. The facility is projected to provide care for a dedicated number of inpatients and outpatients, offering life-changing procedures across both St. Luke’s QC and BGC.
By integrating seamlessly into existing St. Luke’s medical teams, technologies, and systems, the ward ensures uninterrupted and equitable care for indigent patients.
“The Evelyn D. Ang/Dāna Charity Ward represents the very heart of St. Luke’s mission: to bring world-class healthcare to every Filipino, regardless of background or circumstance,” said Dr. Dennis Serrano, St. Luke’s President and CEO. “By fully integrating charity care into our hospital system, we are proving that excellence and compassion can coexist. This initiative is not just about access to healthcare. It’s also about giving dignity, equity, and hope to our patients in need.”
A Testament to Shared Compassion
For Dr. Benjamin S.A. Campomanes, Jr., President of the SLMCFI, the Evelyn D. Ang/Dāna Charity Ward stands as a cornerstone of the Foundation’s broader efforts toward inclusive and sustainable healthcare.
“Evelyn D. Ang/Dāna Charity Ward is more than a facility. It’s really a movement of collective generosity,” said Dr. Campomanes. “Each donation represents a life changed. It’s a model of how generosity can be institutionalized to create systemic impact, helping families find hope and healing when they need it most.”
SLMCFI has long provided social service programs to indigent patients, covering complex surgeries such as organ transplants, cancer treatments, and other high-cost procedures.
The Evelyn D. Ang/Dāna Charity Ward builds upon this legacy, thus ensuring modern care and technologies remain accessible to all.
Seamless Integration for Equitable Care
According to Dr. Campomanes, the Evelyn D. Ang/Dāna Charity Ward operates hand in hand with the hospital’s existing departments.
“Evelyn D. Ang/Dāna Charity Ward is fully woven into our daily operations,” said the SLMCFI President. “The same specialists, nurses, and clinical teams who serve private patients are also attending to charity patients. This guarantees the same standard of quality, compassion, and safety across every case. Because here at St. Luke’s, every patient matters.”
Through this integration, the Ward optimizes St. Luke’s existing manpower and systems, delivering efficient, uninterrupted care within an environment of modern facilities and multidisciplinary expertise. This reflects the hospital’s long-term One Healthcare System vision, where charity and private services can coexist seamlessly.

Cultivating Generosity, Creating Impact
Evelyn D. Ang/Dāna Charity Ward’s mission goes beyond immediate treatment. It seeks to cultivate a culture of generosity and shared healing within the Filipino community. By supporting this initiative, donors and partners contribute directly to expanding access to equitable healthcare, enhancing facilities for the underserved, and building a future where no Filipino is turned away due to financial hardship.
In the words of Dr. Serrano, “Dāna reminds us that the true measure of healthcare is not just in the lives we save, but in the compassion we share.”
With the launch of the Evelyn D. Ang/Dāna Charity Ward, St. Luke’s continues to lead the way in shaping a more compassionate, inclusive, and equitable future for Philippine healthcare, one act of dāna at a time.
