Many social initiatives eventually stop.
The reason is simple:
they rely on goodwill.

This is about designing social systems
that don’t use goodwill as the entry point.

Quick question for fellow film photographers: what makes you comment on someone’s post?

Is it the photo itself, the caption, or just the connection you feel with the person?

#ThrowbackThursday #TBT 4 years ago today we attended a small arts festival in the #Salbke neighbourhood of #Magdeburg. You might remember the little Peng graffiti I shared a while back, where I mentioned some details about this structure: #LesezeichenSalbke ("Salbke Bookmark"). Built in 2009, it served as an open-air library and book-crossing spot (until that was discontinued due to vandalism), a venue for small events, and a noise barrier for locals. It even won awards, including the #EuropeanPrizeForUrbanPublicSpace! As it turns out, the small concert at Lesezeichen Salbke that I mentioned in my old post was happening on October 30, 2021 and I took a photo! 😂

A vibrant nighttime scene featuring a group of people gathered in front of a distinctive, cube-shaped structure made of lattice-like blocks. The structure is illuminated with blue and green lights, creating a striking visual effect. Inside the structure, a small stage is visible, with performers silhouetted against a backdrop of colourful, dynamic lighting. The audience stands on steps and the pavement, watching the performance. In the background, the street is softly lit, with buildings and a hint of urban life, adding to the lively and artistic atmosphere of the event.

A mini #Peng in #Magdeburg #Salbke 🔍

This structure is the #LesezeichenSalbke, or "bookmark" ("Salbke" is the name of the neighbourhood). It was built in 2009 as an open air library (and bookcrossing spot), a venue for small events, and a noise barrier for the locals. It even won some awards (like the #EuropeanPrizeForUrbanPublicSpace)!

Sadly, it's a popular spot for vandalism too, so since 2015, there are no more books here. What a shame, it is such a beautiful concept! And I feel stupid now, because I learned all of this only an hour ago. 😅 I did see a small concert a few years ago here! But it was already dark and short, so I didn't see much of the Lesezeichen at the time.

When I passed by in May to take photos of #PengMagdeburg, it looked rather sad and run-down, but I should have spent more time to take it in. Well, next time!

The image is a medium-distance, eye-level shot of a building facade with a modern, brutalist style. The front of the structure is a wall made of light-coloured concrete blocks, arranged in a grid with an open, decorative pattern. The blocks have square cut-outs, giving the wall a permeable, almost lace-like appearance. The lower part of the wall is covered in dark graffiti and street art, one of them being a stylized face by artist Peng. There are also several framed panels on the wall, possibly with artwork or information on them. A set of concrete stairs leads up to the structure. To the left, a portion of the building extends into a decorative archway, mirroring the same block pattern. In the background, there are other buildings with colourful facades, including a vibrant purple and a dark grey one, and green trees. The sky is a bright blue with large, fluffy white clouds. The foreground shows a paved area with tram tracks running along the street. The image is a medium-distance shot of a contemporary, open-air structure. The main part of the structure features a large stage or platform with wooden steps leading up to it. The back wall of the stage is made of vertical wooden planks, heavily covered with graffiti, posters, and stickers. The left side of the building is made of the same decorative concrete blocks with square cut-outs as seen in a previous image, forming a large overhang. The ground in front of the stage is a mix of patchy grass and a pathway made of grooved wooden planks. In the background, there are other buildings with a mix of red and white facades. The sky is a bright blue with large, fluffy white clouds. The entire scene has a slightly unkempt, urban feel, suggesting it is a well-used public space.

🧵3️⃣ Rather than laziness, the author points to broken incentives and persistent social norms:
💶 More hours often don’t pay off
👩‍❤️‍👨 Spousal tax perks disincentivize full-time work
🛠️ DIY is rising as services vanish
🏖️ Retirement is culturally sacred, even when energy remains

Germany is slipping into a post-work malaise, but not by choice.

Exhibition Wankel Evenwicht| Delicate Equilibrium opens this Friday, April 25, at 11am at the Academiehuis in Zwolle. The exhibition Wankel Evenwicht is a special exploration of the social theme: “How can we live together” in a time of change. ‍ Here is a preview of my part in this, W.I.P. (work in progress) This exhibition is the result of a unique collaboration between six Zwolle artists, designers and the community. In this exhibition you can see the result of that with work and a project by: Everdien Post, Marian Visscher - Benjamins, Jan Pieter Gootjes, Jolan Van de Waeter and Ludie Klamer Gootjes and myself. In the preliminary process of several months we were assisted in our research by students of ArtEZ University of the Arts and Cibap Next. Marian Dorothe Visscher and I had a pleasant collaboration with Ebe Damen, Artez social design student. This under the encouragement and coaching of Tabo Goudswaard, Jeanine van Dalen, Heidie van den Brink. And specially thanks to Lisa Heethaar for overall support Thanks to Creative Works and Cibap Next with the program social innovation and the program Art in the High Choir of the Academy House Grote Kerk Zwolle. You are welcome to come to the opening, but of course you can walk in any other time during the next 6 weeks. The interactive exhibition will last until June 8, 2025. #exhibition #expositie #socialdesign #kunstinhethoogkoor #academiehuis #art #contemporaryart @academiehuiszwolle @cibapnext @artez.art.design.zwolle @artezuniversityofthearts @artist_mariandorothe @jolanvande @everdienpost @tabogoudswaard @jeaninevandalen @lisaheethaar heidivandenbrink

Here is our new Data Song!

Even though countries like Belgium recorded an electoral turnout of 90 per cent, more than half the member states recorded a majority of abstentions in the last European elections.

Abstention has become the majority choice since 1999. A growing phenomenon, which is not good for the health of the European Union.

Antworten gibt's in Barts Vortrag vom 30.04. in Bärnau!

"We argue that: (1) metascience is an imaginative design practice, exploring an enormous design space for social processes; (2) that exploration aims to find new social processes which unlock latent potential for discovery; (3) decentralized change must be possible, so outsiders with superior ideas can't be blocked by established power centers..."
