Should I use MullvadDNS or Quad9 as privacy-focused dns resolver behind my pihole (with unbound for dns over tls in between) ?

I have already abandoned quad9 and switch back to Cloudflare and Google DNS. I want to use quad9, but it's always having connection problems when you need a reliable connection most, I have to make a compromise... Whenever I have troubles connecting to my local government services sites with it on is simply discouraging...

It seems that #quad9 (the #DNS resolver under 9.9.9.9) is sometimes having issues with some domains. Yesterday for example it was able to resolve anz.co.nz, but not www.anz.co.nz.

Has anyone else seen such problems?

That's why I have a list if DNS servers handy, and recommend using #OpenNIC + #quad9 / @quad9dns if you can only configure two!

Well, that was interesting. I switched over to #NextDNS from #Quad9, since #Mikrotik doesn't support http2 doh. That was fine, but I then noticed that the vast majority of my requests to NextDNS were for my local hostnames! Digging... digging... found it. I don't use IPv6 internally and don't define AAAA records internally. Clients ask for both A and AAAA from a blind assumption of dual-stack. To resolve, I just set a wildcard AAAA static record for my subdomain to be ::100. It worked. 🤔

#quad9 doh service is down hard for me in Japan. Maybe I need to look into an alternative. Or go back to running unbound.
