“I don’t think we can all be working 15-hour weeks right now. But is the right number 25? 35?”
Don’t forget the human capacity to generate nearly illimitable make-work.
A World Without Work?
"...there are too few jobs for too many people. But it ignores the actual sources of this trend: deindustrialization, depressed investment, and ultra-wealthy elites who stand in the way of a post-scarcity society."
This.
This is why I focus on food.
This is why I'm building apparatus and infrastructure for me and my neighbors to have free food. Post-scarcity food.
It isn't "being kind". It isn't "out of the goodness of my heart" or "altruism". Or any other dismissive infantilization. (I do care. People should be kind. We *can* take care of each other out of love and support and we should! But I fucking hate that dismissive bullshit attitude from folks who idealize greed and power and oppression).
I build mutual aid to remove the leverage of those that exploit and harm others.
Here is a perfect example of what I am fighting: ICE is using starving kids - a situation they and the people that deploy them have intentionally created - to kidnap and exploit kids.
If everyone was fed, they couldn't use this leverage. (If everyone had universal healthcare, corporations would lose one more means of exploitation. Et cetera, et al.)
Food is power dynamics.
To be fed is to be free.
From the foreword: "Today, Respecting Our Elders is an all-volunteer nonprofit with no paid staff and an annual budget of just $25,000. Yet it distributes $4-5 million in food annually."

Partial list of what I've seen, last 2 (ie, Christmas and New Year's) weeks (remember, the volunteers pick up food from grocery stores etc EVERY DAY except Christmas Day and I think Thanksgiving Day), so I only see a fraction:
Avocados. Fresh organic herbs (tarragon, basil, mint, marjoram). Organic mandarin oranges. Guavas, starfruit, papayas. Precut fruit trays. Lots of sushi (a friend says, "Lots of people want hot food in winter, but sushi's cold"). Fancy mushrooms in gorgeous condition (oyster, lion's mane, maitake, shitaake). Diestel brand turkeys, both cooked and raw. Candy canes, trays of stuffing, tubs of ready-made gravy. Eggs (free range & organic), milk, yogurt, ice cream, nondairy frozen treats.

Years of reflection, four months of writing. The Manifesto shows what happens when systems are built without calm, without flow, without empathy. It’s not ideology—it’s a map for life, creativity, and freedom.

Of all the distorted realities produced by the irrational thought and behavior that now define so-called “modern” culture, nothing is more disturbing than the realization that our dominant mode of survival—economic survival—is rooted in what may be the most dangerous pseudoscience ever created: markets.

I’ve been drifting in and out of Peter Joseph’s work ever since I first saw The Zeitgeist Movement documentary, and around the same time I discovered the Venus Project and the wild‑genius ideas of Buckminster Fuller. Those visions of a resource‑based, collaborative future stuck with me, and they keep feeling as urgent today as they did back then.
Episode 56 “The Capitalist Roots of War” dives deep into why the current market‑driven system breeds conflict, inequality, and environmental collapse, and it sketches how a community‑built, post‑scarcity economy could start to replace it.
If you care about these issues, give the episode a listen (or skim the transcript). Have a nice long walk or the treadmill and let the conversation spark some fresh thinking. 🖖

We did it!!!
We built a new free fridge and community pantry!
It took about a hundred days from deciding to do it, through planning, and finally execution (thread above tracks this). And that is for putting down concrete and electrical. If we did a simple fridge on a pallet, it can be quicker. But even going all out, dang!
So we held the ribbon cutting ceremony. A lot of folks showed up to do the initial stock. Now we'll maintain it and spread the word out to the community. The town has a food resource app. The library maintains a list. I'll add it to our site. The local paper is writing an article.
This is also just the first part of this fridge. They're adding another pantry and an awning to cover it all.
Alright. This one is done. On to the next one!

@lisp@vivaldi.net @gnome @kde #opensource shows having more options makes your option stronger. A great example of how #postscarcity looks like.
Figuring out how to make better algorithms for social media might be the biggest impact on achieving #postscarcity.
Here's some picture's for the concrete slab and electrical outlets for the new Free Fridge in town!
Note: Free fridges don't usually require this level of installation. As long as the fridge has power and a place to sit (even if its on a used pallet), thats good enough.
This church was given a donation with the stipulation that it go to serving the local community, and they decided to install a free fridge and put some infrastructure and accessibility behind it.

Update on the new Free Fridge and Community Pantry in town!
They've completed the electrical work and are laying a concrete slab today. They're also bringing in a person to build out a pantry and paint a mural on it.
We have a ribbon cutting ceremony scheduled for December 7th where folks will bring shelf stable food and fresh produce to add to the first stocking of the fridge!
Note: this site really wanted to go all in. You really only need electrical and something to put the fridge on (minimum concrete blocks or a pallet). But these folks decided to put donated funds to it as they are focused on serving the community.
I'll post pictures of the ribbon cutting ceremony!
Also also! Two other sites have expressed interest in hosting a free fridge now that they've heard about this one! Once you build the first one, subsequent ones become easier!

I want to propose Commons Based Peer Production as an economic model capable of representing #opensource work, #carework, #volunteering and similar efforts, where traditional #capitalism can not.
Would this allow us to describe a path towards a #solarpunk #postscarcity future?
“AI Could Unlock a Post-Scarcity Society”
That old chestnut.

( #PostScarcity)
