Chicken of the woods (š˜“š˜¢š˜¦š˜µš˜Ŗš˜±š˜°š˜³š˜¶š˜“ š˜“š˜¶š˜š˜±š˜©š˜¶š˜³š˜¦š˜¶š˜“), from Thompson Park last September:

#FungiFriday #Mushtodon #polypores #mushrooms #fungi

Fungi in the form of vertically-stacked wrinkly fan-shaped shelves, mostly peachy orange with pale edges, growing on thick, gnarled gray tree bark. A smattering of moss grows on the bark, and fallen oak leaves have collected at the base.

I guess we can all recognize the thought: "This person would look a lot better with a polypore for a head."

Photo of a young shirtless man wearing white pants, posed in a crouching position with a polypore (Fomitopsis pinicola) for a head, hanging on a dark green metal wall, fastened with white tape.

A sawed-off log, left after clearing a trail, has sprouted a ring of small shelf mushrooms; they grow clustered closely together, on the cut end, from just inside the bark to a few inches towards the centre of the log, covering the sapwood of the tree. The mushrooms are shelf-shaped, slightly pinkish, faded brown. The log's bark is blackish, scaly. On the left are a few green leaves of salal, and in front, fronds of dried ferns.

A shelf mushroom, also called a conk. This one is brown mixed with black; the wide rim is off-white. The red "belt" is the border between the dark top and the whitish rim; in this one, it's narrow and barely reddish. The underside (not seen) is white. Along the bottom edge of the rim there's a row of clear droplets; they are secreted from the flesh of the mushroom; the process is called guttation.
The top of the log is covered with small mosses and lichens.

This dryad's saddle (š˜Šš˜¦š˜³š˜Ŗš˜°š˜±š˜°š˜³š˜¶š˜“ š˜“š˜²š˜¶š˜¢š˜®š˜°š˜“š˜¶š˜“) has seen better days. It's looking quite ragged with age, and something has knocked it off its tree.

#MushroomMonday #Mushtodon #fungi #mushrooms #polypores

Several overlapping mushrooms, roundish/ovoid but with massively irregular edges, connected by a thick base towards the top of the picture. The base is detached from the tree it once grew from, and both the base and the edges of the mushrooms have blackened with age. The rest of the mushrooms are beige to brown with dark patches. The whole mass is lying in the green grass.

Dress-shaped polypore on dead log. I go a bit crazy with this one at the end. New blog post: wanderinweeta.blogspot.com/202 #VancouverIsland #Fungi #Polypores #Mushrooms #Silliness #Nature

A dried-out polypore on dead wood. The mushroom is in the shape of a fan, with the narrow end at the top. And the wide end at the bottom has a double fringe, like the fringe on a dancer's dress.
The mushroom is pale brown, with darker brown details; so is the wood of the log. There's a bit of bark at the lower right corner, with some green lichen on it.

A bunch of mushrooms that indeed look rather like the fanned tail feathers of a turkey, white on the edges and darker towards the center, growing on an old log on the ground.

We found a tree practically covered in chicken of the woods (š˜“š˜¢š˜¦š˜µš˜Ŗš˜±š˜°š˜³š˜¶š˜“ š˜“š˜¶š˜š˜±š˜©š˜¶š˜³š˜¦š˜¶š˜“) out on the Area 51 trails, the first time I've ever found this mushroom! šŸ„ This may be a new favorite-- I love the color!

(A bit early for Mushroom Monday locally, but hey, it's Monday in Australia! :neocat_thumbsup: )

Multiple overlapping shelves of corrugated mushrooms, coral in color with pale edges, growing on dark gray tree bark.Several mushrooms like corrugated overlapping fans, coral with pale edges, growing on gray tree bark.A large number of mushrooms like a stack of corrugated rounded shelves, coral with pale irregular edges, growing at the base of a tree in between patches of moss on the bark.Looking up at a tree covered in dark gray bark, a large number of clusters of shelf mushrooms can be seen growing up the side. The visible undersides of the mushrooms are golden yellow.

Some unidentified polypores (probably a species of š˜›š˜³š˜¢š˜®š˜¦š˜µš˜¦š˜“), from Thompson Park:

#MushroomMonday #Mushtodon #mushrooms #polypores #fungi

Several thin flat polypore mushrooms, pale with irregular yellowish brown borders demarcating concentric zones, growing on an old stick on the forest floor.
