#PiDay Countdown: 5 weeks to go!📐
Pi Day facts:
1️⃣ Pi Day was officially recognized as a Holiday in 2009!🎉
2️⃣ Lu Chao broke the world record for reciting the most digits of pi to the 67,890 decimal places in 24hrs and 4 minutes! 🤯
if you haven't already check out our pi day activity: https://explore.stemcoding.org/projects/piday2.html
#PiDay should be the 31st of April (31/4).
Happy #ShamelessPlug Day!
Finding myself in need of #PiDay apparel ("ap-π-rel"?) for an event or two, I've added a couple of pi-related t-shirt designs to my Etsy shop: http://inspiredbymath.etsy.com
• "Approximately Pi" demonstrates the near-equality of π and √2+√3 (that is, 3.1415… vs 1.4142…+1.7320…=3.1462…). Note that √2 and √3 appear courtesy of our old friends the 45°-45°-90° and 30°-60°-90° triangles.
• "Powers-of-Pi Pinwheel" features a sequence of iterated involutes of a unit semicircle, each with length π^n/n! . It's the special case (t=π) of Y. S. Chaikovsky's delightful visualization of the power series for sin(t) and cos(t). (Fun Fact: Long ago, I adapted Chaikovsky's construction to tan(t) and sec(t), but cot(t) and csc(t) still remain elusive. https://trigonography.com/?p=881 )
These join two pi-and-tau designs.
📆 Pi Day Countdown: 7 weeks to go !!📆
Celebrate with a slice of pie and a fun activity! 😋 🎉

Fun fact: Archimedes of Syracuse was credited with the first theoretical calculation of π around 250 BCE. He use polygons to "trap" the circle to find the value! 📐
Fun fact 2: Albert Einstein's Birthday is also on Pi Day in 1879!
Pi day is coming up! Check out our pi day activity!

No matter what time zone you're in, on 12 January at 11:12:13 a.m., the year 2026 will already be over to Pi % (3.141590563%). More precisely, this applies to the second between 11:12:12 a.m. and 11:12:13 a.m.

π Happy ordinal pi day! (314th day of the year)
No, it should not be the US-centric March 14th, which most of the world writes as 14/3 or 14-3.
Science and mathematics are international, without borders, not specific to any one country or culture. As scientists and mathematicians we should seek international-based celebrations that bring us all together around the globe rather than country-specific dates.
The ordinal date (ISO 8601) is the only way to have an international nth day of the year: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ordinal_date
Similarly:
* 88th day: worldwide Piano Day: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piano_Day (blogged https://tantek.com/2024/088/t1/world-piano-day-ordinal-date-iso-8601)
* 256the day: 8-bit day or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Programmer%27s_Day (blogged https://tantek.com/2025/257/t1/happy-8bitday-255-bytes-max)
I suspect there are other such annual worldwide holidays that are pinned to the ordinal date rather than a Gregorian or other non-decimal calendar. Let me know if you have a favorite that you celebrate!
🥧 I haven't made a pie (or picked one up) yet — will have go pick up a slice during a break in this evening’s #w3cTPAC meetings (which are in Japan where it’s already the day after pi day).

On this 22nd day of the 7th month, 22/7 being a better approximation of π than 3.14, here is a curio due to P. Olivera (2005).
Take the fractional part of π, and sum the first 3 groups of 6 decimal digits: you get 1588419.
Skip the next 15 digits: 88419 follow.
Here is a #CommonLisp program to illustrate:

Its what I like to call True Pi Day mathematically 22/7 = 3.14 ^_^
22/7 = 3.142857142857142857 …
π = 3.141592653589793 …
Error of 0.04% (1 part in 2484)

22/7 – It’s π day!
Better π day.
Rational π day.
Bye bye Miss American π day.

Finally, a #ShamelessPlug reminder:
My pi-and-tau t-shirts (and others) are available in the InspiredByMath Etsy shop.
https://inspiredbymath.etsy.com
Order today and I can pretty-much *guarantee* delivery in time for both #PiDay and #TauDay ... 2026.
(Also: Etsy is currently running a seller promotion reimbursing a bit on sales made through the link; this doesn't help *you*, but *I* could certainly use the extra buck! :)
Thanks for your support!
In March of 2023, my kiddo had recently been diagnosed with #CrohnsDisease, so when the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation did a Pie Day fundraiser, I agreed to let my family hit me with one pie for every $50 I raised.
When I made that deal, I had no idea that I would raise over $750! But a promise is a promise.
That was over two years ago, but I am not a video producer, and it took a long time for my #ADHD brain to find itself in the right space to edit this all together. Better late than never though, right? And I’m really happy with how it turned out.
#PiDay #PieDay
If you can draw a circle in pixel art, you can prove π = 4. Happy Pi Day!
