Earlier today, a parent-involved crying incident occurred. A baby was on the scene, and responded immediately and vigorously throughout the incident. The implicated parents, who some reports claim caused an intolerable level of unmet demands, were swiftly and thoroughly notified of their unreasonable behavior.

"Mistakes were made." - Reagan on a massive international criminal scheme that he greenlit

And he could have said, "I made mistakes."

"Famine conditions exist in Gaza-city."

Or, "The genocidal zionist state of israel is conducting a famine in Gaza-city."

I know its April 1st, and impossible to be taken seriously today, but for the love of everything, journalists, stop using the passive voice and the question headline.

Just STOP

The Nation, looking at you, because that's what I'm (trying) to read right now.

I generally cleave to the advice from Strunk & White's The Elements of Style when it comes to avoiding the passive voice, except when I'm asked what happened to the last piece of cake.

"It became eaten."

I've been thinking about #kamalaharris 's speech at the DNC (1st night) for a few days. OK, the part about #Gaza, specifically.

I decided to annotate my thoughts with terrible graphic design.

Note: the part on Gaza/Israel was about 200 words, just over 5% of the speech. It was placed 4/5 of the way through the speech.

I believe Harris emphatically promised to never stop selling weapons to Israel, but maybe that's just my interpretation.

I think this speech was carefully crafted to walk a fine line: expressing sympathy for Palestine while never implicating Israel in Gaza's destruction and reinforcing Kamala's commitment to #AIPAC.

#uspol #words #politicalspeech #dnc #convention #palestine #israel #passivevoice #wordsmith

A very messy annotated version of the 200-word segment. Mastodon won't let me put all the words in here.

My summary:
Mentions of the genocide in Gaza are mostly in passive voice, as if nobody in particular were causing the violence, though the Palestinian people are humanized and given sympathetic presentation (though they are apparently victims without an aggressor). Israel is portrayed in light of the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas, labeled as a terrorist organization with implication that they are linked to Iran and "tyrants." There is no mention of the fact that Israel is the entity causing suffering in Gaza.

Harris uses 1st-person active voice to take ownership of Israel's goal of defending itself and achieving "security," as well as gaining release of the hostages. She says she will always ensure Israel has the ability to defend itself, which I interpret as her promising to never stop selling Israel weapons.

The speech ends, somewhat bizarrely, with Harris swearing to defend "our forces" (American soldiers? in Israel? IDK) and "our interests" (your guess is as good as mine) against "Iran and Iran-backed terrorists." She then immediately swears she will not cozy up to "tyrants and dictators" like "Kim Jong-un" (WTF), because they are "rooting for Trump."

@Okanogen

Sadly, many journalists treat Trump's racism, sexism and bigotry the same way they treat cops shooting people.

EX:
"The child was killed by the bullet coming through the door" (passive voice, no one was responsible for the bullet coming through the door and killing the child)
rather than:
"The cop shot through the door and killed the child." (active voice, the cop was responsible for shooting through the door and killing the child)

Reading some documents that are an exercise in dodging accountability. Every action “should be” {performed, agreed, checked} but the entity who “should” remains unknown and unidentified.

"Rewriting a passive construction to be active almost always makes what you’re saying clearer."

Example: Millions of dollars were embezzled from the company.
Revision: Two executives embezzled millions of dollars from the company.

The self-censorship is so ingrained that, even when *declaring shock about the magnitude of the #genocide*, officials unconsciously avoid stating that Israel is the actor in this massacre.

Who exactly is it that's shocking us, sir?

> In a post on X, UN aid chief Martin Griffiths said he was "appalled."

> "Even after close to five months of brutal hostilities, Gaza still has the ability to shock us," he said.

The passive voice is utilized when it is desired that the question about by whom an action was performed is forgotten.

Every time someone says “the action was performed" I immediately ask “WHO performed the action” because the passive voice is terrible.

More often though i'll hear someone say "this thing needs to be done" and I ask “WHO needs to do this thing" and they mumble and walk away, because they were trying to persuade me that I was the one to do the thing. #PassiveVoice
