First results from the first EPA-permitted ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) experiment.
WHOI's Loc-Ness project dispersed 65,000 litres of sodium hydroxide over 1km² in the Gulf of Maine. Over 4 days: 2-10 tonnes of additional CO₂ drawn into the ocean. No ecosystem harm detected.
Small scale, but this is exactly the data the field has been missing — open-ocean OAE measurement has been nearly impossible until now.
Where should the US build electrochemical marine CDR facilities? New study analyzed 38 coastal sites with seawater intakes and clustered them into 5 regional hubs.
