A community-owned wind farm in the Outer Hebrides is funding a project to plant at least a million native trees on crofts by 2030. So far, 211,000 trees have been planted on 245 crofts to create small woods, promoting nature restoration and biodiversity.

The initiative is primarily funded by profits from the UK's largest community-owned wind farm near Stornoway. It generates ยฃ900,000 annually from three 3MW wind turbines. These profits are reinvested into local community projects, including the ambitious reforestation initiative.

This green energy project has already helped establish three new tree nurseries on the islands.

Crofters are in charge of planting on their own land, working with project advisors and forestry experts. The new woodlands feature a variety of species including alder, hazel, birch, rowan, and Scots pine. Some crofters have even included fruit orchards in their plantings.
