Hey #mstdnca Mastodonauts - we received our package yesterday afternoon, which I expected to contain two M.2 SSD drives.

I opened it this morning to find only one.

I've emailed the merchant, but obviously, this prevents us from moving the database until we have both. The database must be on a mirrored pair of drives. It's too important not to.

AI is making these drives sparse, so fingers crossed I'm just missing a tracking number.

As I continue to reflect on this incredibly terrible tragedy, I recognize that words really don't ever meet the moment.

Ultimately, I want to make sure that folk(x/s) know that there is a safe space here in our community and that the love extends to all members of our community - local and across the fediverse.

We will always abide by the Mastodon Covenant and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which set out specific definitions of protected and unprotected expression.

Transphobia is absolutely not a protected expression. Period. The end.

RE: mastodon.social/@staff/1158499

Those that find the northern part of Turtle Island home, or have ties to our Great White North are always welcome here at mstdn.ca.

We see the value of the Local and Federated feeds and will always maintain them.

If you are abroad and having issues registering, please email hello@mstdn.ca and we'll make sure to make that right.

Hmmm... #mstdnca upgraded to 4.5.5 last night and the home feed is not fetching any posts received before the upgrade.

Apologies if any of you had brilliant insights on a Monday evening.

@chad on #TheCanadian I'm seeing 500 errors for media from some #mstdnca posts. Digging into it a bit more, the remote URLs are showing `cdn.mastdn.ca`. I'm seeing that mastdn.ca is a registered domain, but `cdn.mastdn.ca` isn't loading. Did y'all sunset the domain? If so, I'll patch the remote_urls to `cdn.mstdn.ca` (which seems to work) on my instance.

#mastoadmin

SQL query for fetching count of remote URLs from the media attachments table with domain of "mastdn.ca".

Returned count of 2923 on the TheCanadian.social instance.

Update: I think I've accepted all of the beta test e-transfers.

I was able to set up auto-deposit directly into our Mastodon Canada account. It shows my name, but rest assured, it goes into our dedicated chequing account.

I will be updating the instance About page with this development, I know many were waiting on this.

Again, I'm humbled by how many find their third place here and believe in a federated, distributed future.

Our first step is to find a dual NVMe RAID PCI card, and the only AHCI-compatible one we can find in Canada is in Vancouver. @adam will pick it up and then send it to me here in Edmonton.

Huge props to him, and gosh - what an amazing team we have.

RE: mstdn.ca/@chad/115990168925809

Hey folks - I'm humbled by the support. We've raised enough to comfortably purchase the SSD, but also be able to purchase a second one and configure the two in a RAID 1 (redundant) configuration, so if one fails, we have failover capability.

We're finalizing the bill of materials, comparing pricing to make sure we are getting the best bang for our buck, and then we'll pull the trigger.

Importantly - all of our potential vendors are Canadian.

Thank you to all who contributed! We'll be off of the DigitalOcean database by the end of the month. 🥳

I just made a one-time donation of $120 — the equivalent of $10/month — to #mstdnca. It's the third year I’ve done it, so at this point I think that @chad knows he can count on me.

If an alternative to corporate surveillance platforms is going to thrive, it's up to us as participants/members of our community to make sure that it's sustainable. Mastodon is the best alternative for me, and #mstdnca is the community that I’ve been a part of for over three years now.

Whatever server/instance you’re on, please consider providing financial support to that instance. (Edited for clarity to add those last three words!)

And please consider sharing your knowledge/expertise with your admins to help make your server/instance work. The more capacity and resilience a community has, the better! mstdn.ca/@chad/115990168925809

Hey Canadian Mastodonauts - here's where we're at.

We had some instability the last few days, and it's because the PostgreSQL server (the long term memory for our community) needed more resources.

Giving it more resources means we spend more money, so we went from USD$240 to USD$431/mo. This is, of course, unsustainable.

We're working hard to get this database moved in-house, so we can eliminate this cost, but we need to purchase an SSD and supporting hardware to do it.

We were grateful to receive a $250 donation from a community member. This would just about cover a 1TB NVMe drive, but we'd really like to put a 2TB drive in there to shut this database up for years to come.

At the moment, we have two months of reserves, and we should have three, so we're about $ 1,250 short of our goal.

If you can contribute, I'd be very grateful.

Is #mstdnca having issues again? I am noticing my Sidekiq morgue is filling up again with their failed jobs... I know they just went through a DB migration recovery last weekend that took time to recover. #MastoAdmin @chad

Primarily, timeout. Even their instance direct is slow to load.

The State of the Instance for #mstdnca just wrapped a few minutes ago. Great to see the solid looking finances, and great to hear about the new administrative technical team members. Nice work @chad and team. 😀❤️

As a reminder: we do our best to monitor and identify prominent or notable accounts that might otherwise be subject to impersonation, and flag them as legitimate. We do this via an account role and through @verified. You can see all of the verified accounts by looking at who this account follows.

This is one step our team takes regarding trust and safety.

If you find a local account that you believe might meet these criteria (we don't publish our thresholds to prevent manipulation), please email hello@mstdn.ca.

I've had a few questions via DM asking if @avilewis is legit, and I can confirm that this account belongs to his campaign.

We have made sure that @verified has verified his account.

I have no idea if the account is what it says it is — the account isn’t verified (yet) — but I’m excited to see that NDP leadership candidate @avilewis is now here on Mastodon Canada. The account seems to have been created during last week’s big disruption on #mstdnca and I hadn’t notice it before a few minutes ago.

But if it *is* what it says it is, welcome to Mastodon, Team Avi! I’m thrilled to see you here!

Ah! Seems like mstdn.ca is back to functioning!

It's been interesting to reflect on my own response to the significant disruption over the last week.

And what I’ve learned is that I've come to highly value the connections and engagements that Mastodon has given me. And that engaging via a Canadian platform matters to me. And that when shit goes wrong on this platform, I’m going to be fine!

Huge thanks to @chad and everyone else who joined with him to address the big technical issues that led to the brutal performance of the last week or so. This is what community looks like. Love it! ❤️
