πŸ§ͺ🌊 Scientists in #Japan have developed a new plant-based plastic that does what others can't: it completely dissolves in seawater in just a few hours.

By using cellulose and food-safe salts, the team created a material that stays strong while you use it, but falls apart at the molecular level if it reaches the #ocean – leaving zero #microplastics behind.

Atmospheric microplastic emissions from land and ocean | Nature

"Our model simulations show two to four orders of magnitude overestimation of the measured global median atmospheric MP concentrations...Our results indicate that fewer MP particles are emitted into the atmosphere than previously thought. Land sources dominate the number but not the mass emissions, indicating that MPs emission size distributions should be investigated further."

University of Missouri: Lab-grown algae removes microplastics from water. β€œIn a recent study, [Professor Susie] Dai used genetic engineering to create a new kind of algae that produces a volatile natural oil called limonene β€” the same chemical that gives oranges their refreshing scent. Limonene makes the new algae water-repellent. Because microplastics are also water-repellent, the two come […]

I have space on board Nora Simrad in the Philippines in April and May. It could be just a sailing trip with meeting some awesome locals or it can include in depth discussions on plastic pollution science (general or methods), ocean health and climate change. The yacht is a 14.3m expedition sailing yacht. Super fast (12knots) and comfortable. If you are interested we can chat about what interests you. #science #microplastics #sailing

A beautiful silver hulled sailing yacht with an orange headsail cover sits ted to a pontoon in Japan. The water in front is steel grey with a little blue. Its cloudy and the water is bumpy

Exposure to microplastics from food: Comparative analysis of food types and quantification techniques sciencedirect.com/science/arti

"We found that the highest number of MPs is consumed together with grains, fruit and vegetables (99.5 % of the total EDI). We strongly recommend that the research spotlight is moved to these food categories, as well as to meat, rather than seafood, and the inclusion of food types totally absent so far, e.g. oils and eggs. Extrapolation of particle numbers into a common size range is a key in interstudy comparisons,"

Is this the first? It wont be the last. So few companies are testing now and governments are being slow to force it. #microplastics
