Die Kranichsaison hat begonnen. Auch wenn die Bedingungen für die Aufzucht in Brandenburg dieses Jahr nicht optimal gewesen sein sollen werden wir voraussichtlich wieder viele erhebende Momente mit den "Vögeln des Glücks" erleben :-)

📖Unfortunately, I suddenly noticed it and held it directly without setting it up. The cranes are flying back from their winter quarters.
ℹ️The crane (Grus grus) belongs to the same family. It is 130 cm long and has a wingspan of 245 cm. Its diet includes both animals and plants. Cranes are migratory birds.

Die Kraniche fliegen zurück von ihrem Winterquartier.
ℹ️ Der Kranich (Grus grus) gehört zur gleichnamigen Familie. Er wird 130 cm lang und hat eine Spannweite von 245 cm. Zur Nahrung gehören sowohl Tiere als auch Pflanzen. Kraniche sind Zugvögel.

Kun kettu on peltojen toisella puolella. When the fox is on the other side of the fields.
Kurjet katselivat levottomina ympäriinsä, joka vaikutti oudolta, kun ihmisten läsnäolo ei tuntunut häiritsevän (turvavälistä pitivät kyllä huolen, varsinkin poikasten kanssa).Joten katsoin taivaalle ja sitten tien toiselle puolelle: kettuhan siellä istui pellolla aamuauringossa. Ajatukset vilistelivät mielessä: voiko kettu olla uhkaksi kurkien poikasille, kurki on aikas iso lintu, mutta ketullakin poikaset ruokittavana, etc. Seisoskelin siinä peltojen välissä katsellen kurkiperhettä ja kettua. Kettu lähti saalistamaan jyrsijöitä. Kurjet jatkoivat poikasten ruokkimista. Kuulin eräältä ihmiseltä kurkiemon iskeneen kettuun niin, että se oli ollut paikoillaan jonkin aikaa ja sitten jatkanut matkaa pois. Elämä jatkuu..

The cranes looked around restlessly, which seemed strange, since people passing by didn't seem to disturb them (they did take care of the safety distance, especially with the chicks). So I looked at the sky and then on the other side of the road: there was a fox sitting in a field in the morning sun. Thoughts were racing through my mind: could fox be a threat to crane chicks. I stood there between the fields, watching the crane family and the fox. The fox went hunting for rodents. The cranes continued feeding the chicks. I later heard that an acquaintance had witnessed a parent crane attack a fox..

Ihania pieniä kultaisia palleroita on munista syntynyt! Pikkuisista pidetään hyvää huolta: molemmat emot ruokkivat ja hakevat kaikenlaista syötävää kosteikon niityltä (öttiäisiä, matoja sun muuta poikasille sopivaa). Töyhtöhyyppien hyökkäykset, joilla lienee omat poikaset lähistöllä ja jotka saattavat joutua kurkien ateriaksi, saavat kurjet valppaiksi: poikasten suojelu on kaikille linnuille etusijalla.

Lovely little golden chicks have been born from eggs! They are well taken care of both parents feeding all kinds of food from the wetland meadow (insects, worms and such suitable for young ones). Attacks by lapwings, which probably have their own chicks nearby and which may become a meal for the cranes, make cranes alert: protecting chicks is a priority for all birds.

Kurjet ovat kaikkiaruokaisia ja sammakoiden kutuaikaan niillä on ollut juhlat! Syöminen ei ole ihan yksinkertainen juttu, kun sammakko täytyy yrittää paloitella, mikä kurjen nokalla on hankalaa (vertaa kotkien, haukkojen, tai pöllöjen nokkaan).
Cranes are omnivorous and have had a feast during frogs breeding season! Eating is not a simple matter when you have to try to cut up a frog, which is difficult with a crane's beak (compare to eagle's, hawk's, or owl's beak).

Kurkipari on ollut kärsivällinen, kun yksinäinen kurki, ehkä heidän edellisvuotinen poikasensa, on hakenut seuraa ja ruokaillut yhdessä niiden kanssa. Usein tuntuu olevan kuitenkin ahdasta ja kurki saa taas kerran karkotuksen. Pyrstösulkiin tarttuminen on tehokas keino, kuten joutsenilla... Pesintää ja poikasia varten tarvitsee olla tilaa ja tarpeeksi ravintoa, että jälkikasvulla on mahdollisuus selviytyä hengissä. Niinpä "ylimääräiset" lajitoverit tai kilpailijat karkoitetaan reviiriltä.

The common crane pair has been patient with a lone crane, perhaps their chick from last year, who has sought their company and eaten with them. Often times pair feel that lone crane should leave and is expelled. Grabbing the tail feathers is an effective method, as with swans... There needs to be enough space for breeding and food for the offspring to have them a chance to survive. So "extra" cranes or competitors are expelled from the territory.
