@waldschnecke @xgranade +9001% because one could at least take the toilet paper and put it on a flatbed scanner...

Different tools are good for different tasks:

  • Just because one can use #Photoshop as a #GameEngine doesn't mean it's a good idea to do so!
  • And if we consider time valuable, then it's better to have some goddamn INSTALL.txt file and actual bug/issue tracker than have 200+ people daily ask THE SAME QUESTION

FOSS Advent Calendar - Door 18: Build at the Speed of Thought with Hugo

Tired of slow, bloated websites? Meet Hugo, the world's fastest static site generator. Written in Go, Hugo transforms your Markdown content and templates into a complete, optimized website in milliseconds. Whether you're building a blog, portfolio, documentation, or a company site, Hugo gives you simplicity, speed, and security by default.

Unlike database-driven CMS, Hugo generates pure HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. This means your site loads instantly, is immune to common security vulnerabilities, and can be hosted anywhere for free, GitHub Pages, Netlify, or a simple web server. Its powerful theming system and shortcodes let you create complex layouts without touching JavaScript frameworks, while live-reload development makes writing a joy.

Pro tip: Use Hugo with Netlify CMS for a static site with a dynamic editing experience. You get a Git-based workflow with a friendly admin UI for your content team. With Hugo, you're not just building websites; you're crafting lightning-fast experiences.

What would you build at web speed? A personal blog that loads in a blink, company documentation that's always online, or a portfolio that shines without JavaScript?

SaturdayMP Show 71: Migrate From Rails to Jekyll (Part 4)

youtu.be/eJbMn75dQKo

In this episode I fixe the broken build from the last episode. I also created a Bootstrap plugin to find the Bootstrap SCSS path to load with the help of Claude Code. Spoiler: I'm still not done, so there will be a part 5. Will it ever end?

SaturdayMP Show 70: Migrate From Rails to Jekyll Part 3

youtu.be/0s_3jVIttnc

I'm still not done migrating to Jekyll. In this video I struggle to get Bootstrap customizations working with Jekyll, and I figure out that GitHub Pages gem will use the Primer theme by default. I then break the build by trying to remove the Primer theme.

Jekyll:
jekyllrb.com/

Bootstrap:
getbootstrap.com/

GitHub Pages:
docs.github.com/en/pages

GitHub Pages Primer theme:

SaturdayMP Show 68: Migrate Website From Rails to Jekyll (Part 1)

youtu.be/K2ddgnMDTFk

In this episode I create an empty GitHub Pages Jekyll project with the long-term goal of moving the existing Rails SaturdayMP website to GitHub Pages. While creating the new GitHub Pages project, I play with the GitHub Copilot Agent and create a Docker container to test the new site locally.

GitHub Pages:
docs.github.com/en/pages

Jekyll:
jekyllrb.com/

GitHub Copilot Coding Agent (i.e. using GitHub Copilot via the GitHub website):

File Encryption with JavaScript.

I've been exploring the #WebCryptoAPI and I'm impressed!

When combined with the #FileSystemAPI, it offers a seemingly secure way to #encrypt and #store files directly on your device. Think #localstorage, but with #encryption!

I know #webapps can have #security vulnerabilities since the code is served over the web, so I've #OpenSourced my demo! You can check it out, and it should even work if #selfhosted on #GitHubPages.

Live Demo: dim.positive-intentions.com/?p

Demo Code: github.com/positive-intentions

About the Dim framework:
positive-intentions.com/docs/c

IMPORTANT NOTES (PLEASE READ!):
* This is NOT a product. It's for #testing and #demonstration purposes only.
* It has NOT been reviewed or audited. Do NOT use for sensitive data.
* The "password encryption" currently uses a hardcoded password. This is for demonstration, not security.
* This is NOT meant to replace robust solutions like #VeraCrypt. It's just a #proofofconcept to show what's possible with #browser #APIs.

@pancake Relative.

  • I think in that case there's rather a systemic problem of underresourced #FLOSS projects: More funding and personnel would greatly help in said effort.

The only thing #StaleBot generates are #duplicates due to new tickets being opened with the exact same problem

I don't deny the issue at hand; I just think that such a massive pile needs to be combed through better by using tags and prioritization. Even if that means one has split the backlog into half a dozen different baskets that read "feedback", "suggestion", "bug", "security", "ui/ux", "building", "l18n/i18n", "accessibility", "reproduceability", etc...
