My 30-day digital detox was a really positive experience! 10/10, highly recommend.

The first week or so was pretty rough, especially because I basically had no proofreading jobs coming in (normal for early January). I found myself constantly picking up my phone and unlocking it, only to remember that there was nothing there for me to check or scroll.

But eventually I became less distracted, and I was super productive. I used a sheet protector to make myself a daily checklist/planner because I've found that I tend to thrive on routine. I figure if I do things consistently in the same order, I'm less likely to get distracted by screens.

- Applied for 3 jobs with nonprofit organizations, with one more in progress
- Finished reading FOURTEEN books
- Resumed journaling daily
- Practiced meditation
- Continued daily morning yoga and resumed doing some step aerobics
- Learned to tie 3 new knots
- Took some nice bubble baths
- Grew 4 batches of sprouts in a sprouting jar I got for Christmas
- Started up a weekly catch-up phone call with my brother
- Did some cleaning I'd been putting off
- Had a couple of friends over for a lovely dinner (build-your-own vegan poke bowls)

Now I'm feeling so much better in general. Less anxiety and more hope. Really glad I did this!

Hmmm, less clutter results in fewer things to obsess about. #declutter

When you keep decluttering. It's pretty amazing what kind of stuff you finally pick up and look through. I had no idea that I had so many loyalty cards. I don't use the vast majority of them. Some shops no longer exist, some annual membership cards expired, so I've been able to chuck those.
I get to take another pass (or however many I want) to look through them again, but at least I got rid of the obvious ones.
It shows you how rarely you look at stuff that you have lying around.

Lowering life’s min requirements: 📸 edition

I just let go of most of my camera gear I’ve acquired over the last 20 years – 3 camera bodies, 5 lenses and batteries, filters etc. I just cleaned them all for the final time, packed them carefully into backpacks for maximum protection and sent them all to MPB.

A part of me is sad to have let go of some of my favorite instruments I’ve used and taken care of – well. I hope they bring as much joy to their next owners as I had with them.

This is the first of a series of steps H and I are taking to lower life’s requirements. Since Om launched into our life, our default mode has been to add more resources to life as soon as it’s demanded it. We moved to a bigger home, bought a bigger car, paid for private school, bought him all the toys he wanted. We are thankful and grateful that we were able to do so. However, after a decade, it feels like we are carrying a lot of burden. There’s a lot of hidden costs – physical and mental to this acquisition syndrome. It’s going to be a quarter of shedding for us (stay tuned). Early signs are that the sages of the past were wise for a reason. There is a lightening of the load and let’s see how long that continues.

However, I am also a fan of endings. I wanted to use the opportunity and memorialize these marvels of design and technology and the joy they brought me.

Leica Q (Typ 116)

My first picture with the Leica Q (Typ 116)

The Leica Q was a delight. I purchased it to take pictures of Om and family. It was a constant companion in the 9 years it’s been with me. I’d long wanted a Leica and with my recent experience with a Fuji X100 system, was fairly confident I wanted it to be a fixed lens system. The only reason it didn’t continue to be with me in 2026 has to do with its lack of weather sealing. For my plans in 2026 and 2027, I really need a system that’s well weather sealed. It also had a monster black and white mode that I am definitely going to miss.

Ricoh GR

My first Ricoh GR II photo that I took in Fremont, Seattle.

Not many people knew about the Ricoh GR system when it first came about. This was back when fixed lens systems weren’t really as popular as they’ve gotten since the Fuji X100. However, the Ricoh GR was and still is one of the best pocketable systems in the world. It delivers absolutely delightful pictures and is the near perfect travel camera. Again, this specific one lacked weather sealing, which they’ve since corrected and I highly recommend a GR II, III or IV to anyone considering it.

A lifetime of memories. Thank you! And onwards!

In a world where tab-hoarding is apparently a diagnosable condition, 🤯 someone bravely ventures forth to their browser life—except, whoops, isn't enabled. 🚫 Maybe the Help Center has a solution, or maybe just admit defeat and embrace the of your unmanageable tabs. 🏆

Something to consider in the new year ahead. At home, we really don't have streaming services, so not a concern (we are cable dinosaurs, but they also provide the net and phone, so a deal).

So, I've been trying for a number of years and keep hearing that 'the more you declutter the easier it gets' and this has never been my experience.

Every time it's slow, painful, emotionally draining and HARD.

What am I doing wrong ?

DO NOT recommend the Kondo method to me.

Yes I am explicitly asking for concrete advice.

No jokes and / or sarcasm. Thanks.

I'm going to do a 30-day digital declutter starting on January 2nd, as recommended in the book Digital Minimalism that I read a few weeks ago.

For the digital declutter:
- Delete non-essential apps (including Discord, Mastodon, and YouTube) from my phone
- Block distracting websites on my laptop
- Avoid streaming video (aside from new Drag Race episodes w/ my roomie)
- Streaming music is allowed, but no curating playlists
- Disable notifications for email and messaging apps and designate set times to check for new messages
- Designate a daily window for friends/family to call me for catch-up/chats?

Alternative activities I will focus on instead:
- Job hunting :persevere:
- Reading
- Writing
- Meditation
- Yoga
- Learning new knots

It's almost the end of the year and that means one thing:

It's time to clean out my Downloads folder. Or folders, if we count all of my devices.

And I don't wanna do it, but it's a #DigitalChore that I can't avoid. I mean, I could, but I'll inevitably need to do it someday.
