Trotzdem.

Almirante Brown was ordered as part of Argentina’s effort to maintain naval parity with neighbouring Brazil and Chile. Almirante Brown was ordered as part of Argentina’s effort to maintain naval parity with neighbouring Brazil and Chile. The cruiser was constructed by the Italian shipbuilding firm Ansaldo at Genoa in Italy. She was laid down in 1927, launched in 1929, and commissioned into Argentine service in 1931. The vessel was the lead ship of a two-cruiser class that also included ARA Veinticinco de Mayo.

The design was closely related to contemporary Italian heavy cruisers, particularly in hull form and propulsion layout. Standard displacement was approximately 6,800 tonnes, with a full-load displacement exceeding 9,000 tonnes. The cruiser measured about 170 metres in length and was powered by steam turbines capable of producing roughly 85,000 shaft horsepower. This machinery allowed the ship to reach speeds of around 32 knots, making her one of the fastest warships in South American service at the time.
Armament consisted primarily of six 190 mm guns mounted in three twin turrets, two forward and one aft. This main battery was supported by secondary guns, anti-aircraft weapons, and torpedo tubes. Armour protection was relatively light, consistent with cruiser design philosophy of the era, which prioritised speed and firepower over heavy protection.

A quarter-century ago, with firm commitments from my partner, we commissioned a #sailboat design for #bluewater #cruising on a budget.

Still a lot of elements I like, but it would not be a fast #cruiser. It also needs a substantial motor. Some things I know better than to do now: e.g. that windvane is dangerously far aft, unrepairable at sea.

When it came to the build, my partner dithered and delayed. It was never built.

A photo of a lines plan for a sailboat from a naval architect. The paper on which it is printed is held flat by books at each corner, and the grey wood-look flooring is visible on the left.

The vessel depicted is a sloop with a long boom and a plank bowsprit, looking like a dated 1980s design. It includes a boomkin, and is drawn with a windvane autopilot.

The Italian Regia Marina light cruiser Alberico da Barbiano. Sunk at the Battle of Cape Bon while transporting supplied to Tripoli destinationsjourney.com/histor #maritimeHistory #NavalHistory #RegiaMarina #ItalianNavy #lightcruiser #cruiser #AlbericodaBarbiano

Built by Ansaldo at Genoa, Italy, Alberico da Barbiano was laid down on 16 April 1928, launched on 23 August 1930, and commissioned on 9 June 1931.
As built, Alberico da Barbiano carried eight 152 mm/53 calibre main guns in four twin turrets, providing significant punch against surface opponents. Secondary armament comprised six 100 mm guns, while anti-aircraft defence included eight 37 mm guns and eight 13.2 mm machine guns. The cruiser also had four 533 mm torpedo tubes. She carried two seaplanes (initially CANT 25AR, later Ro.43) with a single catapult for reconnaissance.
Armour was deliberately light, with a 20 mm deck, 24 mm belt, 23 mm turret plating, and a 40 mm conning tower, characteristic of Italian light cruisers prioritising agility over protection
By late 1941 Axis supply lines to North Africa were strained. The Italian High Command ordered Alberico da Barbiano and her sister Alberto di Giussano to deliver desperately needed aviation fuel and supplies to Tripoli. Owing to urgency, fuel barrels were stowed on deck which drastically increased vulnerability. On 13 December 1941, while transiting near Cape Bon, Tunisia, they were intercepted by a force of British and Dutch destroyers using radar to locate their position. In a night engagement, torpedoes and gunfire struck both cruisers; Alberico da Barbiano was engulfed in fire and sank rapidly, with heavy loss of life including Rear Admiral Antonino Toscano and her captain.

The Imperial Japanese Navy light cruiser Ōyodo was designed as a submarine flotilla flagship. Instead, she served as an escort, transport, and fleet support vessel throughout much of her career. In October 1944 she participated in the Battle off Cape Engaño as part of the Northern Force. She was sunk at Kure in July 1945. destinationsjourney.com/histor #MaritimeHistory #NavalHistory #IJN #ImperialJapaneseNavy #Ōyodo #lightcruiser #cruiser #WorldWarTwo #WW2 #WWII #SecondWorldWar

Ōyodo was conceived as a submarine flotilla flagship and long-range reconnaissance cruiser, intended to coordinate submarine operations across the Pacific. Her design prioritised speed, endurance, and command facilities over heavy armament. Her main battery consisted of six 155 mm Type 3 guns mounted in two triple turrets forward, supplemented by eight 100 mm dual-purpose guns amidships for anti-aircraft defence.
By the time Ōyodo entered service, Japanese naval strategy had changed dramatically. Submarine operations no longer held the central importance envisaged before the war, while carrier aviation had assumed the primary reconnaissance role. As a result, Ōyodo never fulfilled her original mission. Instead, she served as an escort, transport, and fleet support vessel throughout much of her career. In October 1944 she participated in the Battle off Cape Engaño as part of the Northern Force during the Battle of Leyte Gulf, screening Japanese carriers in a diversionary role against U.S. forces.
Ōyodo spent her final months largely immobilised at Kure. During heavy US carrier air attacks in late July 1945, she was struck by multiple bombs, capsized in shallow water, and sank on 28 July 1945 with significant loss of life.

HNLMS Sumatra was the second of the Java-class light cruisers built for the Royal Netherlands Navy.

In 1944 she was transferred to the Royal Navy and scuttled on 9 June 1944 at Ouistreham, as part of a gooseberry pier to protect an artificial Mulberry Harbour built by the Allies as part of Operation Overlord. destinationsjourney.com/histor #maritimehistory #NavalHistory #cruiser #RoyalNetherlandsNavy #HNLMSSumatra

HNLMS Sumatra was the second of the Java-class light cruisers built for the Royal Netherlands Navy. Laid down on 15 July 1916, she was not launched until 20 December 1920. Her commissioning did not occur until 26 May 1926 because her intended turbines were destroyed in a fire.

Sumatra spent most of the inter-war years in the Dutch East Indies. In 1938 she returned to the Netherlands. When Germany over-ran the Netherlands, Sumatra left for England. After transporting Princess Juliana of the Netherlands and her daughters to Canada, Sumatra undertook convoy escort duties until late 1940. She then left for the Dutch East Indies where she was laid up for an extensive overhaul.

At the start of hostilities with Japan, she was still undergoing the refit but was quickly re-activated and manned mainly by midshipmen, sailed for England. Problems with her propulsion made her unfit for duty and she was laid up in Portsmith. In 1944 she was transferred to the Royal Navy and scuttled off the coast of Normandy on 9 June 1944 at Ouistreham, as part of a gooseberry pier to protect an artificial Mulberry Harbour built by the Allies as part of Operation Overlord.

On 14 February 1951 her wreck was auctioned with other wrecks to be scrapped.
